Potato salad in a metal bowl?!
Potato salad in a metal bowl?
Is it ok to make and serve potato salad in a metal bowl? I know metal contaminates some foods, but would this be safe?
Answers:
Good quality stainless steel would be fine. If not, the acids in the potatoes will react with the metal giving a metallic taste. I prefer using glass or plastic for potato salad. Remember to cover it well when storing.
stainless steel? Not a problem.
i personally would use a glass bowl
yes, we use stainless steel bowls in kitchens all the time, they dont transfer strong flavours or smells
Stainless steel bowls are fine.
As most have said stainless steel is fine for MAKING it but when it comes to storing your salad, I'd prefer plastic; especially since this isn't a tomato based product that would stain the plastic. Any generic type, preferably see through, that's large enough to hold this should work fine. You spend LOTS of time in preparation making homemade for the family, don't spoil it by leaving it in the original container where you made it.
For the record, I'd prefer to make mine in a glass bowl (my mother many times would use a large wooded salad bowl which worked well too, as long as it's cleaned regularly). Good luck and good eating.
I don't think it's a bad thing for you, but I would serve it in a glass bowl myself! Happy Tater Day....
You will be fine to make and serve it in the metal bowl, but when you take the leftovers to the fridge, do it in plastic for the longer term storage
Stainless steel bowls are ideal and they never contaminate food. Aluminum is a reactive material, and I wouldn't use that if you are putting any vinegar or other acid in it. Potatoes, I must add because of one of the answers, do not contain acid.
