Do olives count as one of our 5 a day fruit or vegetables?!

Question:

Do olives count as one of our 5 a day fruit or vegetables?

Answers:
Yes, they are fruit. I don't know how many would count as one portion though.

Simply... Yes

yes

Only if they have been soaking in a martini

I think olives belong in the salt category....

I'm pretty sure that they are vegetables.Hope this helped!

I would imagine if you ate enough of them

Well they are not meat or pasta or starch based(usually not colorful) hmm...

yes because it a vegetable it will help

I don't know, but i would eat them anyway.i love them.

Yes, if you eat half a cup of them. A serving is half a cup of fruits or vegetables.

From a dietary standpoint, they're not really either one....they're a fat serving, and shouldn't be counted as a fruit or veggie.
You would have to eat a lot of them to constitute a serving, and by then, you would have consumed a huge amount of sodium and fat.

Olives are fruit because they have a pip

Yes they do, but as they are high in good fats you should have no more tha 5 olives per serving, i like to eat them in a salad with other goodies!

yes , they are fruits, be sure to eat a serving

yes as long as they don't have a inside filled with garlic/herb dip

According to this linked page, olives fall under the fats category given the high amount of fat per serving. It does note that the fat in olives will help to increase your HDL or good cholesterol level without increasing the bad one. I don't know if you could also count them as a vegetable serving, as you'd probably have to eat enough of them to get your full day's supply of fats.

Olives themselves are actually very nutritious. They're high in vitamins A and E, and they contain dietary fiber. And olive oil is an established "good" kind of fat. They're technically fruits (specifically, they're drupes: they have one big fat pit, not a bunch of little ones), although they're treated in ways more commonly associated with vegetables.

What's NOT so good about olives is the fact that they're often preserved in brine (lots of sodium), or cured/dried (once again, lots of sodium).

they're a vegetable, therefore,...yes. hope i helped.
*breezy*

Olives are counted as a fat.
They won't raise your blood sugar since there are little if any carbs in them.

yes

(It's a FRUIT)I'd say YES, judging by this:

Olives’ best kept secret
Experimental data are supporting the important role of antioxidants in maintaining health. Laboratory analyses have identified hydroxytyrosol as the most potent antioxidant yet discovered. This highly potent polyphenol is found mainly in olives. CreAgri, Inc. has devloped HidroxTM, an organic, excipient-free, freeze-dried form of hydroxytyrosol that can be used in nutraceuticals and functional foods, as well as in food processing, sanitation, and other applications. It is recovered from the pulp of certified organic olives grown on the company’s own 150-acre organic olive grove. The proprietary, patented process eliminates the pits and unwanted compounds, uses no chemical solvents, has no waste, and is environmentally friendly. Olive juice (present in olives at twice the volume of oil) contains as much as 300 times more polyphenols, including a predominance of hydroxytyrosol-derived polyphenols, than the best extra virgin olive oil. Consumers can get the health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet without the fat and calories associated with olive oil. Some laboratories have shown that polyphenols from olive oil may attack the many inflammatory processes in the body that are at the root of aging and tissue degeneration. The product is available in 0.5%, 2.0%, and 6% concentrations. The 6% form is absorbed, distributed, and metabolized extremely well by the body. Studies show that olive polyphenols have tremendous antioxidant activity, and that hydroxytyrosol may be effective for cancer prevention, anti-inflammatory use, respiratory health, joint health and mobility, skin health, colon and breast health, cardiovascular wellness, and antimicrobial properties. Hydroxytyrosol exhibits high bioavailability, as its molecular size and structure allow it to cross the gastrointestinal lumen and cells of the body to be absorbed into the bloodstream.
