Why do most peanuts come two nuts to one shell?!

Question:

Why do most peanuts come two nuts to one shell?

just wondering about this last night, wondered if anyone had any idea?

Answers:
Heaven help me, I just read through the entire Wikipedia article about peanuts...and there's no Answer as to why peanuts usually have 2 nuts per shell. It was mentioned, however, that TYPICALLY peanuts contain between 1 and 4 nuts per shell (sometimes 5, although this is quite rare). So, I suppose that 2 is average, and the peanuts we normally encounter are "average" peanuts.

On a side note, though: I think Tutto Bene's Answer is pretty damn funny.

Yeh, its sort of the same with men too huh?

I guess because God wanted you to get more for your effort..shelling a nut,and the aggravation that comes with it and only getting ONE would be maddening...I suppose...lol!
