What happened to bananas?!

Question:

What happened to bananas?

Seems to me that when I was younger you could buy green bananas and it would take 2-days for them to ripen. Nowadays they ripening and going soft by the next day! I've noticed this for years now so I don't think it's just me. Bananas definitely ripen faster than they used to...

I think that's because commercial banana nowadays are sprayed with ethylene gas to make it ripens faster hence more product and more revenue (think faster money). I've noticed that if I buy organic bananas, they can stay firm for more than 1 week. Also, do not store your banana in the fridge or any closed container as the natural ethylene gas from the banana would concentrate in that cointainer and make your banana ripens even faster.

Call them nanners and they will ripen slower.

I think they are taking them to near freezing during transport.

they grow up and run away

How are you storing your bananas? That may be the reason they rippen or go bad so quickly. My bananas last quite awhile...about a week.

That **** is bananas B-A-N-A-N-A-S!! sorry i just had to do that.

Now , at the end of your long life things just seem to go faster, dear.

I have not noticed that. I hate bananas. :(

Good observation. Yay!

I agree with you, sometimes I don't even want to buy bananas because they get too soft too fast. What's up with that?

Yeah, I think your're right. I've noticed it too. I think it has to do with where they're coming from, and when they put them out. Also the weather they experience while growing.

and if you buy them from Sams they will rot before they will turn yellow

I think they get more sun

Don't put them on top of the refrigerator. I did that once, and they spoiled over night. Just a random tidbit there,

If you keep them in the fridge they'll ripen slower, but the skin will turn brown, the inside will be just fine. The cold makes the skin change color, but the inside keep longer.

true. i think chemicals had something to do with it

Ask your grocer when the recieve their fresh fruit shippments and when they stock them. Most places recieve them Wed. night and stock themon Thurs. Buy your bananas the day they are put out because most of them should sstill be green.

it this what your life consists of....studying bannannas....anywho its the pesticides

I like naners. In my house, they never seem to ripen fast enough.

if I were you I'd be happy to know that bananas ripen faster. Bananas rule and be proud ;)

To keep your bananas fresher store them in an area on the counter where they can get good air circulation; such as on a banana hanger. Keep them away from apples and tomatoes; as they will speed up the ripping process. Do not store them high up on a shelf or on top of a refrigerator. This also will fasten the process. You can store them in the refrigerator; however it will turn the skins brown, though the banana it's self will still be good for cooking or to make smoothies. And it maybe that you purchased more than you would have normally eaten and just forgot about them until recently when you noticed them turning brown.
