Sell by whatever date?!

Question:

Sell by whatever date?

my question is,is the sell by whatever date is on the package the same as the experation date?Ex. like i bought bread the other day and today my boyfriend trashed it cuz the date on it says"sell by June 1,07,was it expiered?

Answers:
with bread you can tell if it is expired. You probably could have kept that bread for a few more days and would have been safe. Just a suggestion, bread does not get used fast enough in my house, so I freeze it and take it out piece by piece.
In my experience a sell by date is not an expiration date. Like when you buy lunchmeat at a deli it says to sell by the day that you bought it, but lunchmeat stays good for 1 week.

No it wasnt expired. The store would have had to throw it away if they hadnt sold it by then, but it was okay to eat.

To be safe I would say yes.

No it wasn't expired. It's just the stores buiseness. I don't know why they ever put the experation date on it. "Sell By" is just something the store does so if it gets past that date they might throw it out. But if its the day of the sell by date, you should probably keep it for another or two and it will probably be the same as the Expiration date, except about a day. Hope that helps.

NO. There are two kinds of open dates on foods. Most, including on bread, are called "best before" or "best by" dates. These represent the last date that a manufacturer believes their product will be at best quality.... best flavor, consistency, whatever. THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY RELATIONSHIP TO FOOD SAFETY.

The second type of date is called the "expiration" date. This is the date beyond which a product should not be consumed because of a potential hazard to health. For example, in infant formula where a decrease in vitamins might make the formula less nutritious than a baby needs it to be. Expiration dates may also be a date where the company believes a product may become illegal to sell. For example, if a product must have X amount of vitamin C to meet a standard of identity.

So, for foods with best by dates, use your own judgement. If product has been stored well and it doesn't have mold or something... eat it. If you see mold growth or it is badly dried out or has been left out of the chill chest, don't eat it.

no it would of been fine the stores have to sell it by that date and it reccommends that you use by that date but i buy the food reduced on a weekend cos it says use by etc and they cant sell it but it wont kill ya ,just be careful with fresh cream and meats .
