What are some items for a good cold lunch for school?!

Question:

What are some items for a good cold lunch for school?

I'm in summer school. Not because I failed but because I want to get my P.E. credit done with so I won't have to do it during school. I'll be a freshman. Anyway, we have to bring a lunch. Any suggestions on items?

Answers:
There may be more options than you think- probably more than I can think :P

For starters, there's the obvious sandwich option. To keep them fresh and not soggy, put the bread in one bag/container, the meat and cheese in another, the veggies in yet another, and top with a packet of mayo or mustard- or you could put some of that in a tiny container as well. A change of pace from a regular sandwich would be to use pita pocket bread, or make wraps with flour tortillas- just spread on a little cream cheese, sour cream, mayo, Italian or ranch dressing, whatever sauce you like, on the tortilla, and fill the tortilla with what you like- turkey, chicken, ham, salami, cheese, tomato, lettuce, onion, mushrooms, etc. Roll it up, and cut it in half, if you would like. Other options for interesting sandwiches are using other things in place of bread, like plain waffles- cook the waffles, and make a sandwich out of them- try peanut butter and honey, or turkey and cheddar. If you do turkey and cheddar, try serving the waffle sandwich with a side of maple syrup for dipping. Also try the peanut butter and honey option on rice cakes.

Another similar option to sandwiches would be crackers and various toppings- tuna, chicken, or egg salad- or cheese spread and chopped sandwich meats.

Also, try an assortment of salads. Green salads are nice, and fairly healthy, with some nice additions. You could try an Italian salad, by having some greens (lettuce, spinach, whatever you like), and then top with Parmesan cheese, red onion, a little tomato, some basil, croutons, and perhaps some salami meat, diced up. Then serve with a side of Italian dressing. Or try other salads- like cold pasta salads- you know, like macaroni salad. You could store-buy some from your deli, and then add in some stuff to your liking- such as pepperoni or ham, and then some additional veggies.

Some other less-common ideas might be: tortilla chips with various things to dip, such as salsa, bean dip, cheese dip, and sour cream. Or, try something that only needs to be kept somewhat warm, by putting it in a thermos, or in a sealed container, wrapped in tin foil. Some things to try might be chunky soups, chowders, or chili- heat them up really hot before you go, and seal them into a thermos, or a container that doesn't leak- wrap in foil to keep warm. Just be careful it isn't too long before you eat it.

For side items, raw veggies are an obvious choice- try some carrot and celery sticks with some ranch veggie dip or ranch salad dressing. Some other good veggies to try might be cucumber and cherry tomatoes or tomato slices. Baked potato chips are also good. Fruit is also an obvious option, and would help round out the meal. Also try things like yogurt and cottage cheese. Trail mix and dry cereals are good as well, and especially good for snacking and portability. Crackers can also be a side item, with a little cheese or peanut butter.

For a treat, try a jello or pudding cup, a couple of cookies, some Gram crackers or teddy grams, or a few Hershey kisses. Or turn your fruit option into something a little sweeter, by having chocolate dipped fruit.

For drinks, try fruit boxes, cans of lemonade (located with sodas), or flavored waters. Or flavor water yourself by adding one of the kool-aid to go pouches, or something similar.

Remember, try to keep cold things cold- by having an ice pack in your lunch box, or whatever you carry it in- and keep hot things hot- by using a thermos and foil- in either case, it shouldn't be left out long- eat it as soon as you can. Boxed juices, canned drinks, and bottled waters don't require refrigeration to my knowledge, but you probably want to keep them cool. Keep them close to an ice pack.

I hope this gives you some ideas!

If money isn't an issue, there are new sandwiches, all in one, sold by the packaged deli meat, the bread and meat, etc..comes in one package and you put it together right before you eat.

I like these kind of questions.....you can make a selected meat sandwich with selected vegetables, selected chips, and selected fruits. And with your favorite drink.

Good Luck

Yield 4 1/2 Cups, Serves 6

In a blender purée chopped cucumbers, yogurt, sour cream, mustard, salt and white pepper and transfer to a bowl. Chill soup 6 hours or overnight. Stir in finely diced cucumber and fresh dill. Garnish soup with cucumber slices.

On a hot summer day I would go with a nice Israeli salad. It doesn't have to be bland you can put some cheese or chick peas or olives your choice it beats cold cuts good luck!!!!

Well since you're going to be in P.E., you need healthy type snacks/lunch that will give you the proper nutrition and energy you need to maintain for the day.......number 1 thing is, plenty of water! especially because its summertime just about and you dont want to get dehydrated.......take some fruit also to snack on throughout the day.......for lunch, maybe a sandwich, preferably turkey, with some already popped popcorn and some gatorade to drink........or maybe, peanut butter & jelly sandwich with celery sticks (be sure to keep an ice pack in your lunch pail) basically, pick up some snacks that are good for you and can fit into your lunch box.
