Why is salt added in salad during eating not before?!

Question:

Why is salt added in salad during eating not before?

Answers:
Because if you add salt earlier, the salt will draw out the moisture from the vegetables and it will become watery and limp. Adding salt at the last minute preserves there crispiness.

if you add it too soon, it will bring all the juices out of everyhing, resulting in a "watery"salad.

Gee. Salt will wilt the lettuce, make the cucumbers run, make the tomatoes mushy, and give an off-flavor to chopped egg.

To say nothing of the fact that it will increase in intensity the longer it sits.

No salt or pepper on my salad in advance, please!

i have never heard of anyone putting salt on salad, why would you want to do this when your going to put a dressing on the salad which is laden with salt and other flavours.

salt will observe the moisture in air and the salad will become watery . I mean the water will be formed in the bottom of the bowl.So salt should be added before eating only.

Sorry but I have to disagree with everyone here.

You do put salt in a salad and you put it in BEFORE.

The salt is added when you make the dressing. You whisk salt and pepper with the dressing ingredients and then mix it into the salad. Salt is added to season the dressing and hence the salad. There are many salads where salt is added. Food salted beforehand will taste better as the salt incorporates with the dish better. This is especially true for cooked foods. Always salt before cooking.

It is somewhat of a myth that "salt will draw out the moisture." This happens to some degree but 1) it takes a significant amount of time and 2) it does not happen to the degree that people would have you believe.

Do not dress a salad too much in advance or the acid in the dressing will wilt the lettuce.
