Is colesaw fattening?!

Question:

Is colesaw fattening?

i just ate loads with crutons and bacon bits

Answers:
Well, the veggies aren't, but the dressing, baconbits and crutons are... The dressing is made from mayo and/or sour cream. The best way to cut fat and calories from cole slaw (I must admit one of my favorite side dishes I just finished the last little bit I made) is to make the dressing yourself. It is very very easy. Mix a cup and 1/2 of fat free mayo (you don't notice like you do on sandwiches) with 2 tablespoons of vinegar (I used a garlic wine) 1+ tablespoons garlic salt (use less salt if you use normal salts) and as much pepper as you would like. you can add celery seeds (I don't care for them personally) and I also add onion juice (grate an onion over your bowl the shreads are also very good). There are many recipies listed on the net, but this one is a tried and true.

Now for the bacon and crutons, you can make those yourself, but if you don't cut back here you aren't filling up on as much fat as before but my favorite bacon bit are still fresh, cut raw bacon into little strips and fry like normal, drain well on a paper towel. Place a doubled paper towel on top of bacon and press to get as much grease out.

Yes.

yeah, pretty much anything with a mayo base is

Yes the full fat 1 is, you can buy low cal coleslaw that's ok

Well if it is, try eating coleslaw instead.

Adding croutons and bacon bits to coleslaw will certainly make it more fattening than coleslaw on its own. On its own, I think it would depend on the dressing, based on the amount of oil or mayonnaise used. The vegetables that typically go in, like cabbage and carrots, are pretty good for you. Pineapples and apples would increase the calories due to the increased sugar in fruit, but they'd still be better additions than croutons or bacon bits.

yes its got sugar in it

very!! so are croutons and bacon bits!!!

The shop bought stuff is usually lethal in terms of calories from the fat in the mayo and the added sugar. It is also normally full of E numbers and preservatives.

It is very easy to make your own and you can choose the type of mayo you use from the full fat, through light or down to the extra light (the last one is a bit thin though). Simply grate equal quantities of spanish onion, carrot and white cabbage then add the mayo and any seasoning. Mix and leave it to stand for a few hours and there you go. Will keep for 2 to 3 days. Bon appetite

Yes ...can get low fat versions and they are just as good...
would avoid the creamy coleslaw form asda as coleslaw is already creamy and doesnt need cream added.
