Vegetarian food at a barbecue?!
Vegetarian food at a barbecue?
I am hosting a barbecue in July, but nearly half of my guests are vegetarians. What kinds of foods should I prepare/grill for them so they will feel included?
Also, weird question but can I grill vegetarian food next to hamburgers and hot dogs on the same grill or would vegetarians be offended/not eat the food then?
Answers: Grill up some veggie burgers, veggie dogs and/or Veggies (like squash, asparagus, etc.).
Most vegetarians would prefer not to have them cooked next to meat, since it splatters fat and other nasties. Also be aware that some BBQ sauces have meat products like beef and anchovies in them.
If you have another grill available try that, or have one of them bring one. You are very kind to care!!! grass clippings!
make it a potluck, where everyone brings an appropriate dish, if half your guests are vego's then half your dishes will be vego's.
as far as cooking on the grill each vego will have their own requirement Here are some links for ya:) Can't answer the rest of your question, though, 'cause I'm not a vegetarian:( Why? I wouldn't put meat and vegies together just in case and here is a web site that i like personally.
www.vegweb.com 1 medium sized onion choped finely,1 cup of rice ,1 teaspoon of butter, fry until onion see through and rise golden add garlic(optional) 1 teaspooon of tumeric and a cup of mixed veges and use as a salad its filling and attractive add peppers and anything else that takes your fancy grilled vegi shishkabobs. Good Luck! I would cook the meat on a separate grill if possible - just because they wil all have their preferences. Try grilling some good veggies - like portabello mushrooms, squash, zuchinni, etc. You can do a lot!
You could always ask a few of your guests if they have any ideas - then they would really feel included! maybe you can have a separate grill for the veggie dogs and veggie burgers. Or if you only have one grill you probably want to grill the veggie stuff before the meat stuff, because otherwise cross-contamination will occur from meat to the veggie stuff and some of your vegetarian guests might not want that to happen.
Having lots of grilled veggies, maybe a bean & chili stew (make sure there's no meat flavoring or stock in it), some buns, and chpis and dip might be a good idea. You can also try grilling some veggie kababs (mushrooms, bell peppers, tofu, and tomatoes). This way, it won't be that only salads will be offered for the vegetarians.
Whatever you choose to do, I'm sure they'll appreciate your consideration and efforts. vegetable skewers
For example:
bel peppers, mushrooms, pineapple, tomatoes, onions... etc.
I would keep the grill separated (left side for veg and right for meat or something along those lines.)
Don't forget Boca burgers! Tofu, or make a potluck, where everyone brings a dish of their own. And seperately grilled would most likely be preffered. Definitely use a separate grill or just heat up the veggie burgers(not the kind that emulate meat--the ones that have veggies visible) in the oven. Be sure to have a nice garden salad too(some vegetarians don't eat fake meat) with 100% whole grain rolls. If you have a separate grill, veggie kebobs are the way to go. Use an herb(poultry seasoning works well) and apple cider vinegar marinade on veggies like summer squash, zuccini, onions, peppers, portobellas... and fresh or grilled pineapple for desert! A lot of vegetarians avoid white flour and white sugar as well. okay, i'm vegetarian, so trust me on this one. get boca meatless burgers, the flame broiled ones, and soy hot dogs (smart dogs brand are the best). and also skewer some fresh vegetables, like peppers (sweet orange, red, and yellow, maybe some green) sweet onions, etc. and of course, corn on the cob and other veggies. grill all of these, of course. :] you should probobaly make skewers with vegatables on them, chips and dip, veggie dogs and hamburgers, also dont grill the food on the same grill it might accidently touch the meat and someone could get sick after that no vegetarians would be eating the food Veggie shiskabobs.
Maybe buy vegetarian hot dogs and hamburgers.
You could grill baked potatoes and corn on the cob.
I eat hamburgers and hotdogs w.o the meat. They might do that too.
You could have a fruit salad/veg. salad.
I'd get another grill for the vegetarians food. veggie skewers, meditteranean style. and toss a salad and make vegetarian hor deouvres on the side. and to avoid culture clashes just grill your vegetarian stuff first. Try to grill veggie food on a separate rack/grill or on foil - with a 'high 'wall' as a divider so meat juices won't come into contact. Use separate turning tongs too.
Veggieburgers and beanburgers always go down well, as they're great barbecued and can be put in a bap, just like the meat-eater's burgers!
