Kiling fish different than killing cows for meat?!
Kiling fish different than killing cows for meat?
I am a struggling moralist looking for balance in my ever changing world. I seem to have a problem killing cows, chickens, buffalo, insects, etc....but for some reason I reserve my right as an omnivore to choose to eat fish. I'd like to jump off the meat wagon and try the true vegetarian lifestyle but I am so conscious of my health I do not want to sacrifice my body's well-being just because of thick moral fiber. My question is, can I live on vegetables alone without supplements? and will I pay for my vegetarian ways (no meat/dairy..nada) later in life?
Answers: When my dad went veggie for a short period, he said that he continued to eat fish because they don't have big brains & thus don't feel pain (although that's been long debated). I choose not to eat fish/seafood because they're living creatures, & that's enough for me. I also try not to eat eggs, at least in their 'pure' form, because they have the potential to be living (so most people say they're not fertilised, but I say you never know, you can't tell the difference when they are or not).
So... it depends how strongly you feel. About your diet too. I only went veggie once my moral objections outweighed my taste for meat, and I was certain of that. And I have never had any health problems, absolutely nothing. It may be because I'm now older and out of the childhood phase (I became veggie at 12, am now 19), but my health is constantly improving every year! If you do encounter any health problems then these days there are always supplements that you can take, but you may then choose to reconsider your diet choices.
Hope this helps! Yes you will suffer, b/c cows, chickens, and fish are all very delicious. I believe that God provides some animals for our consumption. We are to treat animals as humanely as possible, but we also are allowed to eat them. I have no problem eating beef, chicken, turkey, and fish. I have eaten, squirrel, lamb and rabbit a couple of times. 1 dead fish doesnt feed nearly as many people as one dead cow does...
I suggest eating FREE RANGE CHICKEN eggs to make up for lack of meat, and eat dairy and drink milk.
It is very hard to live on vegetables alone - you need fruit and protein too.
interesting thought: hunting - a deer who is shot had a much happier life than a cow or pig who lived in a feed lot and spent their final days in the slaughter yard surrounded by the smell of death and being starved for 2 days (so they dont poop when dead) - as such hunting is better than store bought...
over all I suggest free range eggs. I've been a Vegan for almost 20 of my 30 years.
You can live a good, healthy life on veggies and such but you really should take a vitamin supplement or at LEAST speak to a qualified nutritionalist. If you go in blind you are likely to fail and get sick. As a vegan I can tell you that you can live a healthy life without fish, although before dropping those multis talking with your Doctor.
I would suggest taking vitamin B12 sup as B12 only comes from animals. Ben Franklin lived on porridge and beer- he lived until he was eighty four.
Supplements are only necessary if you cannot eat a balanced diet.
I doubt there are any food police yet but feel free to eat small white fish- less likely to have absorbed mercury.
I am really tired of the "morals" involved in vegan-vegetarian issues.
If you are moral in all other aspects of your life - I doubt eating fish or meat will send you to limbo purgatory or hell. Millions of vegetarians prove that you don't have to sacrifice your health by being vegetarian. Eat a balanced diet and you'll be fine. I personally think fish are jerks...so you should eat them- I don't eat them just becasue they're gross. But I also think that you can lead a perfectly healthy life with a vegetarian lifestlye. I just had a DELICIOUS salad that involved lots of veggies some black beans and corn racnch dressing and fried tortillas (can't be TOO healthy). I'm finishing it off with some vegan pudding right now. I'm not a vegan, but if I can go there easily, I will. i don't eat fish either...yuck!
