B12 deficiency is something that sets in years after you initially remove it from your diet. This is true because the body stores it and most people have had enough to hold off symptoms of the deficit. This however is not true for children who have not built a store of B12.
People other then vegans and vegetarians do have this problem. Mainly because of an inability to absorb nutrients and specifically B12.
