What foods do i avoid if im vegetarian!??!

Question:

What foods do i avoid if im vegetarian!??

Ive been vegetarians for a few years now, i dont eat the obv meat, fish, jelly sweets etc! But was shocked the other day while eating a packet of smarties to realise i cant eat them because the colouring (E120 or cochniel) sorry it thats spelt wrong! was in included in the ingredients and they are crushed beetles! is there anything else out there that might not be 100% obvious which i should avoid??!! Thanks for any help xxxx

Answers: always read the ingredients.

i assume you are not vegan since you didn't say you were, so it is perfectly acceptable for you to have dairy and eggs and whatnot.

however, stay away from products containing gelatin, as this is made from animal bones. beware of beef shortening, as can be found in most hostess snacks (so no twinkies!). some baked goods have lard in them as well.

always ask about soups at restaurants, even if they sound veggie-safe. they tend to have meat broths. ask your server to double-check if they aren't sure.

caesar dressing sometimes has anchovies, and i accidentally ate this thai sauce that had fish paste. japanese food will have seafood in dishes you wouldn't expect.

try to find rennet-less cheese, as rennet is made from a cow's stomach, i believe (i might be off on the body part, but it's definitely a body part).

don't feel overwhelmed! i've been a vegetarian for 13 years and after a while this stuff becomes second nature. anything with dairy products in it , since all dairy products come from animals

B. um meat? jello also jello (gelatin) is made from the marrow of cow bones and cow skins. totally gross. also same goes for marshmallows. I know for sure this is true cause I used to live near the jello factory is warburn, mass. Confused about why sweets would be against a vegetarian's diet code, also confused, with all the stuff in the world why would smarties have to use beetles for food coloring and EVEN more confused, why would you eat smarties when you just stated that you dot eat "the obv meat, fish, jelly sweets etc! "

Poo. watever is with meat or animal composition. wat a coincidence i am a vegetarian too !!!!!!!!! <What foods do i avoid if im vegetarian!??>

Anything that does not taste good. EVERY thing you eat contains animal contents WHAT DO YOU THINK the things in the ground are made up of that you grow your vegetables?
rotten plants/animals & what plants & animals leave behind
ALL the dirt you grow things in contains animal/plant matter Hiya! I think you've stated most things. Mars was about to go 'anti-veggie' with their products but decided not to - thanks goodness! I can't think of anything else, but always check on the package for gelatin, it's hidden very well!
Yoghurts usually have it, esp. low fat ones. Look out for it also in puddings, jellybeans, marshmallows etc. Some cookies may have it stuffed in the filling too.

Sometimes it is good to also check in cooking cubes (maggi, knorr for example), coz they may sometimes add non-veggie things. Also always check for the 'Suitable for vegetarians' sign (usually a green tick) on the products you buy! (remember cheese also!) That's all that comes to mind! Good question by the way, hope I helped xx That is in their Bubblegum Smarties and doesn't appear to be in the regular Smarties. I agree it is disgusting.

"Despite the popular misconception, Allura Red AC (red dye 40) is not derived from the cochineal insect." I think the ff. foods are NO-NO for vegetarians:
-Marsh Mallows (because of the substances in it...dont know what substance)
-Mentos candy
-Onions
-Garlic
-Egg
-And other herbs... if you don't eat diary or fish you r a vegan so you shouldn't eat soup at restaurants they use chicken broth and don't eat junk food eat alot of soy Anything with:
milk
whey
eggs
gelatin
carmine
any type of meat

That's all I can think of on the spur of the moment--I'll edit this later if I remember. Hope I helped! i am vegetarian and i dont eat any meats and fish. no gelatin and no eggs unless the eggs are in cookies or cakes becuz those are Ok.
