What are some benefits and disadvantages of becoming a vegetarian?
I have often heard that generally persons who were vegan, or vegetarian were generally in better health than person who consumed meat. I'm looking to improve my overall state of health ( I think becoming a vegetarian may help), and I want to know others opinion on the subject..

I was originally a lacto-ovo vegetarian and have been vegan for a number of years now.
In terms of benefits, this is what I have noticed for myself:
*Significant weightloss bringing my weight into the perfect range for health at my height for the first time since being a child.
*Increased energy.
*Better sleep.
*Feeling a hell of a lot of happier through proving to myself that I have the discipline to stick to something important.
*Healing of depression and anxiety through adopting a healthy diet.
*Feeling more connected to nature and animals.
Man the list just goes on. As with all diets it is important to balance it correctly. I had a blood test out of interest last year to prove that I was in great health, and my doctor was so amazed at my level of health that he rang me to tell me!
How about this? My mother's friend swears she cured her cancer with a raw food vegetarian diet.

In terms of disadvantages? Cravings can be difficult at the start, especially since so many of us grow up on a meaty diet. I found it quite difficult to begin with but I can tell you honestly that this is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Sometimes it can be frustrating as you learn more about the cruelties and unhealth of the industry and see how the majority of the world accept it as the norm, but knowing that you're not involved is a great feeling. Some people get really defensive around vegetarians but you can pretty much see that for what it is.
Learning a new brand of nutrition can be a challenge, but there is an absolute ABUNDANCE of amazingly healthy vegetarians/vegans showing us all how much vegan foods kicks ***.
The only health disadvantage with vegetarianism is when you may overcompensate with eggs and milk. With veganism I believe there is none.

drawbacks.........'trusting' that the vegetarian foods that your family/friends/restaurants have made for you are indeed animal free. many people think chicken broth meatless, soit must be vegetarian. one lady i know made refried beans with bacon and just told me to pick out the bacon.
other drawbacks.........feeling like you have to explain yourself all the time and really meat eaters get tired of listening to it. and finally you become self-rightous. you try not to, but it's difficult.
