Is tofu purchased in a supermarket typically vegetarian?!

Question:

Is tofu purchased in a supermarket typically vegetarian?

There is some vitamin added, I forget what it is called and the label said nothing about whether it is from a vegetarian source. I am concerned because I think it has calcium in it and might come from animal, like animal bone.

Answers:

No, it does not come from animals. As one person pointed out, nigari (magnesium chloride) is obtained from seawater. Calcium sulfate is sometimes used and this is a mineral obtained from the ground. In its raw mineral form, it's called gypsum. Other uses of gypsum include fertilizer, wall plaster and blackboard chalk.

I had to laugh at that person who said "how else will you get calcium?". Well DUHHH...animals get it from plants and plants get it from the GROUND. Also, the calcium compounds obtained from bone are calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate, NOT calcium sulfate.

In general, most chlorides and sulfates are obtained from non-living sources.
