Are there any exclusivly vegetarian cooks/ chefs?!

Question:

Are there any exclusivly vegetarian cooks/ chefs?

I'm a vegetarian and was put off the idea of going into catering because my choice of materials was seriously limited. Is it possible to become a sucessful chef cooking without meat or fish?

Answers:

If you can cater for vegans and vegetarians go for it. Kurma Dasa was head chef at one of Australia’s most famous Hare Krishna Restaurants - “Crossways”, at 123 Swanston Street Melbourne Australia - in the late Nineties. Kurma no longer cooks there (he lives in Perth, Western Australia), but the restaurant still serves massive quantities of delicious wholesome budget meals cooked according to Kurma’s recipes. He has literally 1000s of recipes all vegetarian and they are actually very good.

Its very hard as a vegetarian to find vegetarian chefs unless one eats at the Harre Krishna eating houses. The other concern is the fact that at main stream restraunts cross contamination can occur and that is a concern.

also there appears to be quite a negative view by many chefs of vegetarism and I think as more people tirn towaards being a vegetarian for a range of reasons - health, koving animals, threat of disease of eating animals etc there will be a need for more competent and serious vegetarian chefs. You will certainly be in a moinority group but you will have a niche market and will be able to set standards and go where many chefs and cooks get frightened of going - cooking without meat. Good luck and go for it!!
