Why are people insensitive to the pain of animals whom they consume.?

We are a family of vegetarians for generations.I feel extremely revulsed at the thought of eating another animal.I have tried to see what it tastes like.And became sick ever since.The taste was so horrible.When the taste is so horrible,why people take it.At parties,I have seen many rich and so called dignified people,man and women alike, behave virtually like dogs fighting for non-veg dishes. Recently I was teaching my child that we must be compassionate to animals and told him that recently it has been found out that people who are insensitive to the pain and suffering of other creatures turn out to be bad characters in life.He asked me then are all people who eat other animals,are bad characters.I found it hard to explain.Can anyone help?

People are insensitive to the pain of animals because of the benefits they enjoy of being a superior creature. People have the tendencies to satisfy their taste buds with different tastes and thats the reason why they hunt down the animals. Since the dawn of civilisation, the humans have been hunting down animals for pleasures, luxury, health and even for clothing. The flesh that they eat satisfies their purposes quite well.
Pain can only be understood if a person goes through it. How will a man look like to see another man's throat cut infront of him and then the other persons eating his head like dogs.
The matter of fact is-------People are the cruelest animals on the earth. They only understand the language of pain once they go through it.
I would advice you to teach your child this part very well so that it helps him to understand the basic nature of human beings and why do different people do different things.
