Good: high protein, high in B12 and iron.
Bad: Excessive intake can lead to constipation and excessive protein can damage the kidneys. Meat usually contains high animal fats and that can damage the heart. There may also be risk of infectious disease through bacteria or parasites especially if the meat is not thoroughly cooked. There may be chances of exposure to environmental contaminants. Some people believe a diet high in meat poses a great risk for cancer--this view is somewhat controversial.
For the guy who said "you never see an elderly vegetarian" I say, go to India and you'll see lots of them. My wife's family is from India. Her mother is in her 80s and doing well. Her grandfather died at 96. Two uncles died recently and both were in their 80s. Another uncle and his wife are both doing well and both are over 80. This uncle has a habit of standing on his head. I'm 30 years younger and I never could do that. Another aunt is doing well in her 80s. My wife's spiritual leader recently celebrated his 89th birthday. All of these people; vegetarians.
My wife's father died of a heart attack and stroke at the age of 55--guess what, he ate meat. One of my brother's in law had a heart attack a a few years ago, he's about 55, and he eats meat. Another sister in law is battling cancer in her 50s, she eats meat. None of my wife's family who are vegetarian have any major health problems except the ones who are over 70.
I am a 50 year old male lacto vegetarian; I guess I am pale but so are other people in my family (and all of them eat meat). I'm kind of fat but I'm also pretty muscular because I lift weights. My beard is gray but my face has no wrinkles. I had gray hair since I was 17, which was ten years before I became vegetarian. I rarely get sick or have colds. Most people who see me would probably say I look like a wrestler or a biker.
