Animals who are slaughtered for meat??

I was wondering if anyone had any information about what conditions they are kept in etc. I would like to read up as much or little as I can get my hand son (so to speak).

The reason for my sudden interest is because last night one of my friends and I had a disscussion about why she decided to become vegan. She told me quite alot of disturbing things and I would like to read up on this, I am strongly considering becoming vegitarian.
