Hi there - Since papayas are a tropical fruit, they don't really have a pronounced season (like apples, for comparison). You can usually find them all year round in a well-stocked grocery store. They can be pretty pricey (for fruit) - I think recently I've seen small papayas (a little larger than a pear) selling for $3.99 or $4.99 a piece. The larger ones (about football-sized) usually sell by the pound, maybe $2.99/lb, which would mean a large papaya would cost around $15. The pricing could be very different in your area, though...

Mashing papaya shouldn't be that difficult - cut it in half, scoop out the seeds, then scoop out the flesh (which is very soft when ripe). Or you could cut the skin away, instead of scooping out the flesh...then put flesh in a bowl and attack it with the back of a big spoon, or a potato masher if you have one. Good luck!
