Is there a difference between Japanese miso and English miso?!

Question:

Is there a difference between Japanese miso and English miso?

I've tried to make quite a few vegan dishes that include miso but the taste of the miso always comes out very strong and salty. I buy my miso from Japan... it's very dark brown, has lots of bits in and is made of fermented soy beans.

I've never used miso bought from the uk but have heard that it can be light in colour and can be made of chickpeas(?).... am I using the right kind of miso for these vegan recipes?

I know what Japanese miso is like and how to use it for japanese recipes because I am half japanese and my family have been cooking such since I was born.

I'd just like to know whether, when I see miso as an ingredient in western recipes, they are referring to the authentic japanese trype or an english/western type?
