Vegetarian: Substitute for Crab/Fish Sauce?

Hello, I'm a beginner vegetarian who would like to know what sauce could substitute crab sauce/fish sauce in cooking? My mom uses that stuff in her cooking and I really don't want to eat anything that deals with it- not unless that stuff is vegetarian :)

I was thinking of soy sauce, but the taste is a bit too different from fish sauce.

not asking for sauce on fish or crab. I meant literally fish sauce or crab sauce. it's usually found in asian markets

Yes you can get vegetarian fish sauce. It is more common to find vegetarian oyster sauce (from my experience). Usually you have to go to an Asian market.
