Dear Kate,
It is a bold decision you take and only reinforces my belief in your courageous steps to developing into a wise young woman. A sensitivity uncommon in your peers, nevertheless a growing pattern in many young people of conscience. Since your mother already feeds the vegetarian brother, it cannot be an imposition by you changing your diet. What I can tell you about vegetarianism and dairy products is that most of the highly spiritual people had adopted this feeding regime from an early age. Calcium is available in several foods such as rice some other grains. The meat and dairy producers in alliance with governments try very hard to keep the public ensnared into the trap of supporting this non sustainable system; at great cost to the environment!
I would imagine your mum would recognise how mature you have become in making this choice, and welcome you into her confidence. If you have any doubts about the nutritional value of vegetarianism, there are heaps of websites available to allay your fears.
The best of luck to you in your endevours.
Martin
