6 year old vegetarian, need some advice?!
6 year old vegetarian, need some advice?
I'll be honest and say I know absolutely nothing about being a vegetarian. I have never been one or known someone close to me who is one.
Since my daughter was a baby and started table food she has never liked meat. I've kept trying to offer her meat in many different ways to try and get her to eat it. Her reason is simple, she just doesn't like it.
Now my daughter is 6 years old and I am just starting to come around to the fact that she is a self-choosing vegetarian. She is NOT picky when it comes to other foods. She loves vegetables, fruits, yogurt, cheese, eggs, pasta, rice, beans, etc.
The problem is that I don't know what to cook that is nutritionally balanced for a young vegetarian. What should she be eating in the place of meats?
My daughter does have a problem with being really petite. What could she eat that would help her put some weight on?
Do you have any suggestions that could help me learn about being a vegetarian?
Thanks!

veggiefootballfan - I have tried for FIVE years to get her to eat meat. She just doesn't like it. I'm not about to force her to eat something she hates.
It is not like she is forgoing meat and eating chocolate and cupcakes. She loves healthy food. Her favorite thing is broccoli and rice. How many kids do you know who would eat that willingly, nevermind loving it?
As I said before, I am just NOW giving up on her eating meat. She may decide that she likes it when she is older or she may not. As long as she is eating a balanced nutritious meal then she can make her own choice.

Hi, its really cool that you are allowing her to forge her own path through the food chain - nice one !
why not try the vegetarian society at www.vegsoc.org
They have great info packs for new veggies, young veggies, parents and a whole range of pages about what is a good balanced veggie diet. ( al packs are free )
This could be a good starting point:

And, its all easy to read, not preachy or stuffy, it just tells you the stuff clearly and quickly
You might want to remember that there is nothing in meat that you need for a healthy diet. So, if you have a balance of vegetables, fruit, nuts and dairy she will be fine.
