If a vegan diet is so healthy then why are vegans deficient in so many nutrients?

Just saying its healthier does not make it healthier.

The Vegan Society and Vegan Outreach, and others, recommend that vegans either consistently eat foods fortified with B12 or take a B12 supplement.

Deficiencies in Vitamin B12, a bacterial product that cannot be reliably found in plant foods, can have serious health consequences, including anemia and neurodegenerative disease.

A 5.2 year study, released in February 2007 by Oxford, showed that vegans have an increased risk of bone fractures over both meat eaters and vegetarians, likely due to lower dietary calcium intake, and that vegans consuming more than the UK's estimated average requirements for calcium of 525 mg/day had risk of bone fractures similar to other groups.

The diets of about 100 vegans were recorded for a week and were found deficient in calcium, iodine and vitamin B12. Using the same standards, though, the standard American diet are deficient in 7 nutrients! The diet of your average American is not only also deficient in calcium and iodine, it's deficient in vitamin C, vitamin E, fiber, folate, and magnesium as well.

JenasaurusX, How can non-vegetarain who eat meat and/or dairy be deficient in b12? Meat and dairy are a source for b12.

JenasaurusX, its not me you disagree with its your own fellow vegans. One of my sources was from the Vegan Society and Vegan Outreach themself.

You dont even agree with your own fellow vegans!

Krister, carl lewis is a professional athlete, vegan or not he would always be healthier then most all Americans.

Sorry but ussing a professional athlete as a example is pretty poor proof that a vegan diet is healthier.

Drum Wizard, sorry but the science does not support your argument about b12.

Most all nutrionists agree with me on the b12 issue. Only scientists out on the fringe claim vegans are not deficient in b12 or in need of supplamentation to provide their body with b12.

They're in the same camp as the nutty professors who claim there is no such thing as global warming.

I just love how you are all slandering me, one of your own fellow vegetarians. I guess this just shows how nutty some of you vegans truly are!!

You people are so nutty that you won't even accept the science that contradicts everything you say and state.

You people go onb and on and provid4e no sources, proof, or evidence for anything you state. You act as if I am suppose to accept what you say as true just simply because you say its so, but sorry, I wont do that. I am a rational being unlike most of you vegans.
