Answers:

This wasn't much of a problem until the internet came along!

I've been veg a long time and by the '80s most people understood that being veg meant no animal products. In the late '80s-early '90s the Beef Council put out a screed to inform their membership about vegetarians and it included the first mention of animal eating vegetarians and pesca-whatevers (I refuse to type that fish + arian filth). I've been looking for the origination of that word for months and that's the FIRST place I've found it in print! It really does seem that the concept of being an animal eating vegetarian (and those IDIOTIC words they use to describe themselves) came from the beef industry!

Things really got bad once someone anonymously added those stupid words and the concept of being an animal eating vegetarian to the Wikipedia article about vegetarianism. EVERYTHING mentioning the subject on the web tracks back to that wiki article as proof that it's acceptable, and it's been since those edits that this has really become a problem!

Unless someone can show me a pre-1990 source I'm pretty well convinced it's the meat industry (and their money) that started the whole thing as a way to get back at the people that were costing them dollars.

And as always, anyone who eats fish and wants a special name to describe their diet (other than omnivore or picky eater) needs to use the term invented over 2000 years ago to describe people that include fish in their diet (just look down).
