Jelly, jam....?!
Jelly, jam....?
I just answered a question here about jelly not being suitable for vegetarians and some of the answerers said that no true vegetarian would eat jelly (this included jelly made with out animal products, as far as I could tell), why is this?

I'm talking about the kind of jelly used in the US. Come to think of it the sugar issue must be the reason why a true vegetarian wouldn't eat it.
Answers:
As long as the jelly contains fruit pectin, and not gelatine, its fine for vegetarians to eat. Gelatine is made from the boiled bones, skin, ligaments and tendons of slaughtered animals, but pectin is made from apples. Also, some "natural flavors" are derived from animal sources. I make homemade jams and jellies, using only organic, homegrown fruits and fruit pectin-perfectly okay for vegetarians AND vegans to eat.
