Vegans... would you eat eggs from your own hens?!

Question:

Vegans... would you eat eggs from your own hens?

If you knew that the hens were happy and not suffering in any way and the eggs would of course be unfertilised... would you eat them? Are there any other ethical reasons why we shouldn't eat eggs?

Also, I want to ask for advice on how to keep hens. My parents will be moving to the country within the next year and love the idea of keeping their own hens. I've suggested they should rescue some battery farmed hens... does anyone know whether this will be a good idea? Could they actually suffer from the shock of going outside after so long?

Thanks for your answers. I would like to say though that I'm not a vegan because of the label... I genuinly believe each of my choices should be approached with rational thinking.

I don't eat eggs because of the cruelty involved in the production of them... I am already aware of the males being killed etc etc. But if my parents are able to give a few battery farmed hens a happy home then I don't see any ethical reasons why there eggs shouldn't be eaten... they wouldn't be fertilised and the hens wouldn't suffer to produce them. If by eating them, I lose the label 'vegan' well I'm not really bothered to be honest.

I would like to know though whether there are any ethical reasons why eating eggs from happy rescued hens could still be considered wrong.

Hi Jenny,

Here's a really good site about rescue hens.

Your parents will be doing a good thing rescuing them.

Good Luck!

Oh, if they do recover & start laying naturally, it's a good thing. Yes of course you should eat or at least give away the eggs. It would be a terrible waste to throw them out.

On average, a hen lays almost 300 eggs a year!
My mom told me, she had free range chickens when she was growing up.
She would go egg hunting every morning and count them.
:-)

MikeL, she said BATTERY hens, not battered hens.
Also note she said HENs, not chickens...?
What does this have to do with her being a "city vegan"? She's suggesting this cos her parents are moving to the "country"...
