Vegetarian health question?!
Vegetarian health question?
My sister calls herself a vegetarian but she eats alot of breads and not enough veggies. Is this healthy? If not how harmful is this to her health? What can this do to her?
Answers:
Well starches are your main source of energy when you are veg but too much of anything is not good for you.
She can miss out on essential vitamins and minerals. We get about 80% of our protein from veggies. If she doesn't drink a glass of milk every other day she might not be getting enough calcium either. I will tell you soy milk is much better for you and you get more calcium but...
If she is not eating whole grain breads she may not be getting enough iron either. Which can be really bad. Iron regulates the oxygen in the blood. Without it there is not enough oxygen in the blood. Meaning your brain and other important organs don't get enough good blood. Your body will slowly shut down. You get tired more often for no reason and so on. As a veggie the hardest thing to get enough of is iron.
Educate her. Tell her she needs to eat more varried foods. Remind her to eat more by... when she is making food ask her if she wants to have whatever veggie with that. Encourage her to eat more. Don't be mean or she will become defensive and not listen to you.
She needs to eat at least, at least 7 veggies a day. A full serving too not just a tiny itty bitty bit either. She needs to eat starches about 9 times a day. One peice of bread counts as one serving. She needs to eat 4 green veggies a day too. Half of her veggies should be green veggies. Pick fresh veggies or frozen over canned whenever possible. They have more nutrients and normally 20 times less salt.
