Why is it wrong to compare humans with animals?!

Question:

Why is it wrong to compare humans with animals?

If you wouldn't eat a human, why would you eat an animal? What is the difference? Besides, humans are animals too. They fall in the order Primates, which includes monkeys.

Answers:

Good question. A dead human is just meat, no more than any dead animal. And yes, humans are definitely animals. I think the argument people like involves the cognitive difference between humans and animals. Humans have a very highly developed sense of "self" which they aply to themselves and others that they consider to be like them (ie other humans), and they regard "animals" as being lesser beings because they don't ask questions. Ever hear a cow say " I think, therefore I am"? It's too easy to pretend that they don't have feelings, opinions etc. I don't even like the term "animal". A cow isn't an animal, she's a cow. A horse isn't an animal, it's a horse and so forth. Animals is a blanket term that doesn't really mean anything. If you take the time to get to know them you'll find that they all have there own little personality quirks that make them individuals. They have life experiences that make them what they are. They may not sit there philosiphizing all day about the finer points of existence but that doesn't mean they don't like living. In my opinion they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect in accordance with what they need to stay healthy and happy if they are going to be kept as pets or livestock. As for eating them, there are plenty of carniverous species out there and I don't think anyone can tell a wolf that it is wrong to meat. Animals eating each other is natural, even if it isn't pleasant. For the record, I think the way most "meat" animals are raised is pathetic. The only concern seems to be the bottom line and not how the animals feel about their conditions. People call pigs filthy animals because they root in their own filth. But what do you expect from a creature that likes and needs to root around when the only life it knows is the inside of a filthy pen? In my opinion it is not wrong at all to compare humans to animals. To deny the animal nature of a human is absurd and innaproppriate. We have hormones and instincts just like they do and to understand them allows us to understand ourselves. And for the record, history is replete with examples of humans treating races of humans not their own like animals.
