Question:

If plants all of a sudden had rights and feelings what would Vegans do next?

hypothetically speaking if plants, meaning beans fruits vegetables soy etc just magically had feelings and felt pain, had faces and could scream and cry and was seen as a living breathing being with emotions, what would happen to veganism? would it still exist since the plants arent as cute? or what

tia - no arguments, like i said this is just meant as a thought i had, wondering if people would really do as you say and drink vitamin water or find ways to justify killing things the way non vegans do

Answers:

This is such a great question!

As an ethical vegan, I understand the choices I have and how they affect me both morally and health-wise. I make decisions which cause the least amount of harm possible. But (hypothetically) if eating plants suddenly meant that I was causing the same amount of harm as eating meat, I would have to weigh my own survival against my ethics. It would be a very unpleasant decision to make, but I think that all sentient creatures have an underlying desire to survive. Therefore, logically speaking, keeping a vegan diet would be null and void, since it would cause the same amount of harm to the human species of which we are trying to avoid on animals. I would still be pro-animal rights but would also take into consideration other kingdom's rights insomuch as it did not mean the death of myself or my species.

I'm glad you used the word "hypothetical," because my answer in no way means I'd change my diet under real circumstances; but I'm able to make an educated guess as to what I would do under these strange "hypothetical" turn of events.
