Non vegetarian enzymes?!

Question:

Non vegetarian enzymes?

Could someone give me list of foods that contain non vegetarian friendly enzmes?

Answers: I've never seen a detained list (hmm, maybe I should make one<g>) but the 'stereotypical' place to find them is (of course) in cheese. Unless the cheese *specifically* states is was made without the use of animal based enzymes it most likely is made with rennet.

Here's what makes putting together a list so difficult. Enzymes are often used in processing stages that destroy the enzymes! That means the maker doesn't have to list their use on their labels. It is VERY common for fruit and vegetables that get juiced to be dosed with animal based digestive enzymes to increase production. The last time I saw any *public* numbers on this, almost all non-citrus fruit juices were made with animal enzymes along with most vegetable juices.

In the past several years some producers of essential oils have started doing the same thing. It's not become a major problem with them *yet*, but it's a trend that can't be ignored<sigh>!

Some companies that produce natural flavorings use enzymes to extract the flavors from their plant based source materials.

They also get used in a few cases to produce natural colorings.

The only way to know if a company is using animal based enzymes is to ask them if their company uses the enzymes in ANY stage of their production process and if they are certain that none of their ingredients were produced using animal enzymes. Source(s):
In no way should this answer be construed as revealing any trade or industry secrets. WOW... I don't know! I ONLY deal with veggie friendly enzymes. That's how my mother trained me. bee pollen is the highest source of natural enzymes.
