Coping with vegetarianism in University/College?!

Question:

Coping with vegetarianism in University/College?

Hello everyone!

I will be sharing a kitchen at University (with people that are likely to eat meat&fish).
I was thinking that this could cause complications with food shopping and meal sharing. . they may not want to cater for my tastes and my be unwilling to eat my vegetarian meals.
I'm also a bit worried about bringing my own utensils and them being used to cut etc meat or fish..euhghh (i know they get washed but ugh!!)

Any thoughts on this...or tips?
If you are vegetarian how did you handle the situation in University/College?

My appreciation in advance!!

how about you get off the vegetarian boards if you have nothing productive to say...tw@T! You are unlikely to be cooking for other people. I never did and lived with people from uni for 4 years. Only occasionally would we cook together. We were great mates but you will have different timetables and you will join different groups clubs etc. If you need to keep your utensils in your room, or just explain why you dont want people to use them, unless you end up living with idiots im sure they will respect your wishes.

You probably wont be sharing that much shopping, even when I lived with 5 other guys we pretty much bought our own stuff. Its probably easier just to buy your own stuff as you would be eating more veg than other people and well, if you buy your own and eat your own its one less reason for an argument.

In fact in your first year you should not be worried about cooking, you should be worrying about blowing your loan on booze and take-out (veggie for you of course, but take-out non the less)

Hope this helps ;) you gotta be kiddin me....sounds a little OCD. Just keep your own cooking things in your room. Use as needed. And if you make meatless food look nice, most meat-eaters would eat it. Most are omnivorous anyways. How but you get a real life and eat meat. If you can afford it, live alone. Apart from money, there is no advantage to having roommates.
If you're too broke, you just gotta lay down some rules like they don't touch your utensils, ever, and you don't touch theirs. The utensils are washed..dont fret about that. Shop for yourself if anyone has an issue. I'm sure that most people will chip in for veggies, legumes and noodles though! Obviously you are not going to want to eat the same meals if the others are having roast beef, but utensils.

Isn't the whole point not to create a demand for farm animals, exactly how does share a knife with a meat eater do that? Unless your food is truly gross, your dorm-mates will eat it. College students are always hungry.

Buy your own cooking equipment and store it in your room. It's as simple as that. And label all of your food; if it has no name on it, some people will treat it as fair game and eat it without your permission. Shouldn't be a problem. Just don't share food with anyone... buy your own items and keep them in the fridge or cupboard. Keep your utensils in a separate drawer with a label with your name so that no one borrows them. If anyone asks you to go shopping together and share the cost, say no.
