Vegan/Vegis:Have you ever been asked "Don't you ever just want a steak" after telling someone you are meatless
I have been asked this more times than I can count. Please tell me others get this question when someone new finds out you don't eat meat!+
Answers: Yes. Or "Oh, you're vegetarian, here, try a bit of this [meat dish], it's delicious!" Or "You have NO IDEA what you're missing!" (as if I've never tried it before... or that I miss it!)
Or just last night, someone noticed I was only eating the vegetarian dishes, and asked if I was vegetarian. When I said yes, they responded "Oh, you can eat this meat... it's halal!" :O Vegetarian =/= Muslim.
Edit: I might have read the tone wrong. If you're talking about a polite question about cravings... I actually rarely get interesting questions like that. Most people don't care, some ask basic or silly stuff, and occasionally someone wants to argue. YES very annoying, if I wanted it I WOULD EAT IT lol. but I mean seriously wouldnt you just like to have a bite of steak? just a tiny one, I am not saying you eat the whole thing just a bite.
Are you one of those vegans that gets mad at people when they eat meat? Sure, most people think when you stop eating meat you crave it.
They just don't understand there are other ways to get the proteins you need. I never once craved meat, but it didn't bother me that people asked. At least they were interested enough in my life to find out more. hey shouldn't be a big deal; its just that they find it appetizing and they just want to know that how its possible to avoid eating something that they find soo appetizing and mouth watering right in front of you :-p I don't understand. Does that mean you don't want the steak? Lol. Sorry. Couldn't resist. how could we yearn for that which we have never tasted in the first place? besides there's always hash brown! i luv potatoes.
a mouth watering reflex reaction is learnt and acquired from previous experience. No newborn mouth waters when it sees food it has never tasted before! Think Basic Science people! What a dumb question ! They obviously are talking about themselves and not noticing you.I have never got it though. All I have been asked is" Do you mind if we eat meat at your table?" To be honest, nobody has made fun of me after learning that I'm vegan. However, I'm at the largest University in my state and so it's a pretty progressive environment. Whenever the topic comes up, I would say over half the time people want to learn more about my diet and why I've chosen it.
I do get some "Wow, I don't know if I could do that" comments, so I tell them that it's initially difficult but it gets pretty easy and I'd be glad to help them begin. It's been a few weeks since I've seen my roommate/best friend eat any meat or poultry. He's eaten some seafood, but he's primarily moved to all-vegetarian meals. i think that people who ask that are so dumb. obviously we don't eat it. so we don't want it. :p but someone was even dumber than that. my family went to a restraunt and we told the waitress we were vegetarian and she said "well, we have lamb" omgosh lamb IS meat!! :p I haven't been asked that specific question, but I do get a lot of surprised looks followed by "Oh, I don't think I could ever do that." It doesn't bother me so much, but I hate having to explain over and over again why I eat the way I do. It's my choice, just like eating meat is their choice. It's gotten to the point where my explanation feels scripted because I've given my reasons for not eating meat so many times. I understand people's curiosity, but can't I just eat my tofu in peace? usually a tv commercial can give me a craving, but it lasts until about the end of the commercial.
most annoying question for me is: "where do you get your protein from if you dont eat meat?" when i say veggies have protein, the response is "thats not true".
THATS annoying. Yes. But I must say I have a similar reaction when I hear that someone has gone low-carb: "What? No potatoes? No pasta? No CHOCOLATE?! FOREVER?!?!? How can you STAND it?" So I try to be tolerant.
