I am concerned about animal protein and meat as part of my diet?!
I am concerned about animal protein and meat as part of my diet?
firstly; how much protein does my body require on a daily basis? and does exercise contribute to the amount i should be consuming. i think that usually 3 proportions a day is adequate enough for a female (20 something, 5feet7 and 8stones) and this wouldnt change as i get older?
should i be consuming less red meat than poultry or seafood, and why is this?
farming?... diseases in animals; ie: blue tongue etc.
a huge concern is animal hormones. What are the existing and long term effects this can have over my health?
is organic produce a better option, how much better and why?
finally, vegetarian protein.
how much vegetarian protein should i be consuming compared to protein from meat, and why?
is being a vegetarian a good idea. if so, than how will it benefit my health? Additional Details

questions. This is a big question!
You will find answers at this site:

There is a wealth of information at this USA government site too (especially the 'My Pyramid' pages):
http://www.nutrition.gov/
Protein in your food is used for growth and the repair of your body. Exercise will not significantly increase the demand for protein. A normal amount is usually quite sufficient even taking into account that your muscles may grow slowly if your exercise is regular. Exercise will improve the tone and strength of your muscles but not necessarily promote their growth (unless you are doing lots of heavy weight work).
Your body does not care where the protein comes from; cows, locusts, mushrooms, seeds, cod, frogs, etc. I'm reminded of something my friend once said:
The audience you're asking the question of already shows what answer you're looking for. your body needs a balanced diet of carbs, minerals, proteins, iron and neutriants, to get this meat must be part of the diet. if you want to cut your intake of meat then go more towards fish and chicken,it will help to keep a balance.
if you decide to be vegetarian, speak to your GP for advice on how to keep the body working 100% because your body wont benefit from veg alone. potassium overload is not pleasant on the body.
as for animal diseases, dont worry. a good freind of mine has the abbatoir where i live, theres a vet there for every kill and the carcass goes thro alot of tests before cleared to the food chain.
stay away from supermarket meat as its reared with hormones for quick growth to meet demands and not good for your health.
hope this has helped a little, best of luck. Can't answer all your questions but in the UK animal growth hormones are banned. If you look for farm assured meat you know the animals have had a good standard of life and have been monitored to ensure this. You are best to buy from your local butcher as meat there is usually locally sourced and hasn't travelled the length and breadth of the country. Organic is a matter of personal choice, as yet the prices are still ridiculously high for any improved flavour. The exception probably is chicken and eggs. Lambs are usually just fed on grass (not profitable enough to feed them grain) Hi, you don't need to eat meat (or even animal products) to get protein. I am a vegetarian and get my protein from eggs, houmas, cheese (lots of cheese I love it!) and some pulses. I am probably a bit strange for a veggie cos there are loads of vegetables I don't like and I hate beans - but these are also a good source of protein if you do like them. Soya products are also very good these days and actually are more beneficial than a lot of meat (far lower in fat and calories, don't clog your arteries etc). I have been vegetarian for around twenty years, (since I was 14) and am very healthy. There are loads of sites on the internet that will be able to answer your questions eg, www.goveg.com.
A lot of vegetarians don't eat meat for health reasons. Meat actually has too much protein in, as well as fat and cholesterol. Protein really isn't that much of an issue because it's in so many foods and it's quite hard to be deficient of it, even on a vegan diet. Some foods which are especially high in protein are beans, wholegrains (like wholegrain bread, pasta and cereals), Nuts, seeds and my favourite, tofu.
There are so many reasons to go veggie that i'd be here forever explaining them. Before you make the change, do lots of research on the web... you will learn about all the health benefits and it won't be a hard decision to make once you know the facts.
Personally I know my health has improved since giving up meat. I have a lot more energy and even my eczema and hayfever have dissapeared. I'm a lot happier too... I don't know whether that's a direct result of my diet or because I just feel better for having more compassion than I used to but either way, since going veg my life, health and character have all definitely improved. I don't understand "the butcher"
How can you say "meat must be part of the diet" and then immediately disprove this by saying you have a 17 year old veggie daughter.
Is she dead ?
If not, then you dont "need" meat, do you ??
I've been veggie for 27 years and am not dead, so i guess thata at least 2 people in the world that don't "need" meat.
Maybe its just not true eh ?
You see your GP when you are ill, not when you are becoming vegetarian.
The veggie society has great info on nutrition, protein, minerals etc. You get perfectly normal levels of all you need by eating a balance of veggies, fruit, nuts, dairy, cereals.
check out www.vegsoc.org and look through the food facts sections.
For example, here si theprotein page:
http://www.vegsoc.org/info/protein.html...
I've never ever thought about my diet other than to make sure i exclude meat, fish, poultry and slaughter by-products. I'm perfectly healthy, never ill, always busy, no supplements. No isses with being veggie at all. Really stop worrying about it ,if you eat a well balanced diet then you have no need to worry about any vitamin or protein, one portion of fish twice a week or if you miss out on any you can back all your daily requirements up with food and multivitamin with minerals , so please don`t worry
