Baby Food Organic vs Locally grown?!

Question:

Baby Food Organic vs Locally grown?

My son is currently on all organic baby food. Unfortunately there is not a very large selection of organic baby food. I know there are several online stores I can order from (if I made six-figures =)) but I was actually thinking about making my own baby food at home. I was wondering from a health standpoint whether it would be better to feed him locally grown produce that has been SUPER carefully washed or if it would be better to purchase organic food from our local grocery store. What are your thoughts??

Answers: When you say locally-grown, are you referring to locally-grown by *certified organic* growers, or just a regular Mom 'n' Pop stand at the farmer's market? Small-time farmers are actually one of the most notorious users of pesticides because they are not regulated like commercial farms. Unless they are organic certified. Some farmers voluntarily eschew pesticides, but not all do. Besides, how would you know?

The other part of the equation is that organic food at a grocery store may not have frequent turnover and is consequently not that fresh. This may or may not be true, depending on what kind of people shop at the store. I have been to purely organic stores and their produce looked like it was picked a month ago. Rotting and falling to pieces. Give me the fresh normal produce any day.

If you can find a local organic grower, that is the best solution from a health standpoint. first of all.. i think it's great that you're feeding him only organic food but there's nothing wrong with getting locally grown produce...
it's healthier for the environment (since your cutting down on supporting businesses shipping food great lengths) and this way you'll know for sure that the food isn't processed with anything nasty since you'll be making it at home... and fresh food always tastes better than packaged food =)
