Can bunnies eat cheese?!
Can bunnies eat cheese?
I have never given my pet bunny cheese, but I was just wondering if they can eat it because when ever I am eating cheese around my bunny she seems to want to take a nibble. I was wondering if that is bad for them? Also, I read that some bunnies like apple slices? Is this safe for all bunnies to eat? My bun is a dwarf rabbit.
thanks!
Answers: Rabbits love apples, but only give them small amounts. Too much can upset their digestive system. Normally the only time rabbits are given dairy products is a little yogurt while they are on antibiotics to replenish the natural bacteria in their gut.
Here's a really good link about what you should feed rabbits:
http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/diet.html... Rabbits do not have the enzyme needed to digest dairy products. If you must give your bunny cheese try some soy cheese which is made from soy beans. I still don't recommend a very large piece, but it may satisfy her need for cheese without being dangerous for her to eat. Check out www.rabbit.org for some healthy alternatives for treats for your bunny. Cheese is bad for rabbits and every other animal.
Rabbits do not eat products that are made with the milk of another species, just like all other animals.
They do not drink milk even from their own species into adulthood, just like all other animals.
People are animals and do those things but they are going against nature and their physiologies by doing it, at risk to their own health. bunnies will eat any fruit, veggie or even leaves. just be careful, a rabbit can't tell when it's full and will literally eat itself to death. My grandermother rabbit ate so much lettuce that it died of literally, a water overdose (like that woman who died from drinking to much water to get a wii). Don't feed any animals dairy, it's rough on their little stomachs. cheese is too high in fat. low fat cheese is too high in protein.
apple slices are fine. Try it And see what they think of it. Maybe you should have put this in the Pets section. Cheese is not good for bunnies, who are natural vegans. Your little friend might simply be curious about what you're eating but please don't give her any dairy products.
Small amounts of apple are ok. We peel everything that isn't organic before giving it to our little guys. In addition to what's already been said, it should be noted that humans are only able to tolerate bovine milk because we've been doing it for hundreds of years and have passed the enzyme down to offspring.
Cultures that do not favor cow's milk are largely lactose intolerant, such as many Asian countries. My Chinese roommate gets intense cramps if he drinks real milk, or eats a food that has a high milk content.
Outside of mankind, feeding milk of one species to another is generally a bad idea. I've seen cats and dogs nurse offspring of the opposite species, though.
