Hmmm---looks like the answers are quite divided.

I was only asking because of the designations vegetarians use as far as eating some things and not the others. Poultry and pork both have light and dark meat so I wonder why they aren't considered the same diet wise.

prodigy----good answer. Here is an except from the USDA
Why is Pork Red Meat
"Oxygen is delivered to muscles by the red cells in the blood. One of the proteins in meat, myoglobin, holds the oxygen in the muscle. The amount of myoglobin in animal muscles determines the color of meat. Pork is classified a "red" meat because it contains more myoglobin than chicken or fish. When fresh pork is cooked, it becomes lighter in color, but it is still a red meat. Pork is classed as "livestock" along with veal, lamb and beef. All livestock are considered "red meat."" Source(s):
http://www.fsis.usda.gov/fact_sheets/por... I believe it is called "the other white meat" for a reason! haha! No, white meat I consider it red meat, as it comes from a mammal and comes red and bloody in the packet - chicken and fish don't tend to. That 'other white meat' thing always struck me as a marketing gimmick to convince people that pork is just as health-conscious as chicken breast or fish. nope ista white meat yes No it is the "other" white meat! Yes, unless you believe that stupid advertising campaign by the pig people. What does it look like at the supermarket??? Just as red as beef, lamb, horse, goat, etc... no it is the "other white meat" Well.. People made the marketing gimmick that pork was the "other white meat" Because they did not realise that some of the nutrition in pork is better than that of usual white meats, like chicken or turkey. So it has the nutrition, I suppose of white meat, but I'm sure it's still considered red meat. it is "white meat" it doesn't have the iron content as "red meat" I have no idea...
In this section, the only thing that matters is that it IS meat...
:] No it is white meat like poultry or fish. according to the pork producers council, no. according to everyone else, yes.

"the other white meat" is just a clever advertising gimmick to trick people into believing eating pig is healthy....it's not I always thought it was the "other white meat" but now after reading Prodigy's answer I see I was always wrong. You can blame the pork commercials for that! I guess so, unless it decays and turns brown. Yes It's red meat
The slogan "the other white meat" has been taken way out of context.. They meant to imply that it was healthier then red meat as far as fat content. No.Pork is white meat. Lean meat Red meat- Mammalian.

Other meat- Avian, Aquatic,

All meat- Death and disease. No,it's classed as a white meat like chicken. Some consider it so. I put it in the "white meat" column, although it is not as easily digested as poultry, fish or seafood. Yes. it is so is pepperoni It's the other white meat. "because of the designations vegetarians use as far as eating some things and not the others".....

If people use the colour of meat to decide what to eat then they are not vegetarians. Veggies don't eat any meat, whether it be red, white, or orange and pink checkers.

Pork is meat, thats all we need to know in the context of your addtion comment quoted above. Yeah, it is considered to be a red meat - though I have heard it called both though. First off.. it is MEAT.. white meats are still MEAT.. Fish is still MEAT... poultry is a subcategory WITHIN the larger category "MEAT" not a separate category.

But, white or red, pork is meat...

anyone who eats white OR red meat, cattle or fish or even insects.. does not fit the definiton of "vegetarian"

I'm a tall striking blonde, by the way..kinda like Cameron Diaz..

Hmm.. that's funny.. i made that statement, but then I went over to the mirror, and my hair was still dark brown, and I was still only 5'3" tall.. Wow.. I guess calling yourelf something doesn't make it true! I don't care how dead animal is classified. I would have said white meat but after Prodigy's answer I guess it is red meat. Very intresting. Good question because I learned smething today! Oh wow! Wait a minute it just hit me isn't that what this forum is for?
