Im newly vegetarian, what foods should I avoid?!

Question:

Im newly vegetarian, what foods should I avoid?

Im not vegan, just vegetarian. I know (obviously) to avoid mean, but what has hidden meat product in in? I know Gelatin has it hiding in there, so is there anything else I should look out for?

Answers: Beware the following ingredients:
* Suet, dripping and lard - solid fat from kidneys of cattle or sheep
* Rennet - derived from calves' stomachs and used to harden some cheeses
* E120 - red food colouring made from squashed insects

Also be wary of certain brands of wine. Many are 'clarified' using blood, bone marrow or fish swimbladders.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/food/story/0,,... if you think a product has meat in it, then your best bet is to stay away...better to not eat it then to try and later find out it contained meat products. The biggest one that caught me by surprise is refried beans. I like to have taco night every so often and I always serve refried beans. Well, one day I noticed there was vegetarian refried beans next to the regular ones. Checked the labels and discovered that the regular refried beans has lard in it. I am not vegetarian but I have cut red meat almost out of my diet and I certainly do not want to eat lard. So needless to say, I always buy the veg. refried beans now. Good luck with your new diet. basically gelatin (Skittles, starburst, gummy candies) Lard (some baked goods, but thankfully not too many anymore).. and rennet (in some cheeses)

Good for you.. enjoy your new lifestyle!!
