Organic fruit and vegetables boxes?!

Question:

Organic fruit and vegetables boxes?

I am thinking about ordering the boxes of organic fruit and vegetables that can be delivered to your door,I am thinking that it will all be seasonal. Can anyone recommend a good company and do you think it is worth it from your experience of these boxes.I realise they do organic veg in most supermarkets so i would like to see what people think the best option is as I want to go all organic.

Answers: Definitely go for the organic box delivery. I order mine from www.riverford.co.uk

They're the most popular company in england and have won numerous awards. Their fruit and veg is in a different class to what supermarkets sell... they come with mud on so you know it's fresh and they taste amazing.

I've taken a lot more interest in cooking since ordering my veg because you get something different each week and it forces you to try things you normally wouldn't pick up in the supermarket. Riverford also gives you a newsletter and weekly recipe.

EDIT:

I forgot to mention, they only deliver to a certain area once a week. This means that they don't need to make lots of unneccessary trips. If you think about it, it's much better for the environment if one vehicle drives through delivering to one area a week, rather than all of those people separately driving to a shop. The nearest farm shop to me is at least a 20 minute drive so the box scheme is a better option in my opinion. Sounds like a good idea, i dont actually know of any companies that deliver but ive always wondered if there are any out there. If the produce was good and affordable i'd definitely order from a company that delivered to my door. I used to use Abel and Cole - they always seemed pretty good to me Best option would be to buy it from a local farm shop or healthfood/cooperative. Most towns ( in the UK at least ) have them and you can be sure of using a local low-food-miles source.

As you can tell I don't understand delivering fruit, particularly if you are looking to organic. long distance ( >10 miles ) creates much polution, so is it right to damage the environment for everyone else just so you have the convinience of home delivery ?

I put it in a similar vein to driving a 5 litre car to take an empty bottle to the re-cycling. In many ways it defeats the object when you consider the whole process.

Sorry, just don't understand it. depends where you live, there is a site that will tell you where your nearest supplier is. Can't remember what it's called but if you google organic veg boxes uk it will come up. Buying via a local supplier ensures lower CO2 emissions and fresher food, some suppliers do source products from overseas eg banana, oranges etc but a basic box will be locally sourced. Buying from supermarkets is tempting because there is more choice but let's support local, small businesses where we can. farmer's markets are another good source of local (not always organic) produce and you can always grow some yourself. A sunny windowsill will give you tomatoes and salads and herbs. Hope you find what you're looking for. I always buy organic fruit and veg, I use loads (I'm a veggie and I don't eat dairy) and I've trundled though loads of different shops and home deliveries, to see which are the best quality/value etc. as the farm shop near by is great but it doesn't sell organic, I've used several organic box delivery services and the quality is awful compared to the stuff that I choose when I buy it myself, there is a huge difference in quality between products ( bearing in mind that I love fruit and veg and I am very fussy, so maybe others won't mind as much) I have even thrown produce away delivered by a box scheme.. for quality, this sounds ridiculous, but I found ocado the best for home delivery options, its dearer than most shops but quality is good, they also do a box but I haven't used it, after that I found sainsburies deliveries alright - cheaper though not as much choice, I dont buy it instore as the sainsburies near me hasn't much choice and the quality hasn't been great when I've bought stuff there, tomatoes mouldy in a day etc. best thing is to grow things yourself - not a veg garden as such if you don't have the time or the space, but organic lettuce may be 70 /80pence(or bit more maybe a quid?) to buy a pack of say 160 seeds which can be used as cut & come again, grow easy on a windowsill but are maybe a couple of quid per lettuce in a shop, organic , I keep saying I will but as yet I haven't..
and they would taste better - my mates have flavour! any how, good luck! There will be a local farm in your area that does it, I get mine delivered to the door once a fortnight, they also do their own eggs, butter, milk, cream and cheese..
They deliver to different areas each day, so mine always comes on a Friday.
Check out your local farmers market, they usually do them or will tell you who does it in your area.
