What is gluten?!
What is gluten?
Is it vegetarian friendly?
Answers: It sure is. As long as it doesn't have meat products added.
It's usually called "seitan" in veggie circles.
Basically, it is wheat dough with all the starch etc washed out of it. (I first read about it in a book of science projects!)
There is one site that I keep visiting that talks about it:

How to make, recipes etc:

The traditional wikipedia link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/seitan... Glutens are the proteins found in grains and flour..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/gluten... Basically, a product can be wheat free, but not necessarily gluten free. The gluten free diet is free of all wheat, barley, rye and oat products (including triticale, spelt & kamut)....
Hope this helps ~~sarah~~ Gluten is a gray, sticky, nutritious mixture of protiens found in wheat and other grains. Gluten is a substance that is found primarily in wheat flour and it is what gives bread dough its stretchiness. Since it is plant based, it probably is. yes, it's vegetarian friendly
It's made from flour, or something foudn in wheat It is vegetarian friendly, but an intolerance, known as Celiac's(sp) Disease, can be highly problematic.
I have a friend who was diagnosed with this. add her food allegeries to the mix and the list of foods she CAN eat is longer than the foods she CANNOT.
poor girl. Gluten is the protein found in certain grains, particularly wheat. Gluten is not present in corn or rice.
Seitan (Asian fake meat) is almost entirely wheat gluten. A mixture of plant proteins occurring in cereal grains, chiefly corn and wheat, used as an adhesive and as a flour substitute.
Absolutely vegetarian!
