Comfort food... Vegans only please...?!

Question:

Comfort food... Vegans only please...?

OK. So, in the last few weeks I have been following a vegan diet..... It hasn't been a stuggle, like a lot of people talk about. However, today I am stuggling.

I have had a VERY BAD week.. And today it is not getting any better. In fact, it is getting worse because of a major B that I work with... But that is another rant all together.......

During my childhood my mother would make the most wonderful comfort food... of course most of these contained non-vegan-friendly foods.... Since today has been such a bad continuation of my terrible week, I am finding myself craving those home cooked, non-vegan comfort foods.

I don't want to "cheat", I told myself I would commit to this for a whole month before making any decisions or further diet changes.

If you have any really good, like OMG good - not just edible, vegan versions of comfort food classics I would really appreciate it!

If you are not vegan, please post a great joke to help brighten my day! I need some laughter!

Fred V..... By the way, I'm lactose-intolerant....... So vegan wasn't that big of a step from Veggie... Since I don't eat dairy anyway. And, who are you to judge?

I appreciate your effort at posting a joke, but please know that it didn't help me at all, as it was highly inappropriate for this subject.

Shame on you for the taking time and energy to make my day worse, instead of being a decent and kind human being. If you want to make a point, this wasn't the question to make it on.

I was asking for you to help lift my day, not to attack my diet and connect such diet to "eating poop in hell" with your very tasteless, inconsiderate, poorly devised, sad attempt at a joke. But please, have a great day… One of us should….

Oh, and Fred, by the way... I don't have anything against people who dont' follow the same diet.. As I posted in my question, I was asking for comfort food and a maybe a laugh... I wasn't asking for a jerk to get on HIS SOUP BOX, and then to twist my question around to justify his petty, pointless rant.....

Have you taken your meds today?

Oh, and I do have to thank you for one thing.... Responding to your idiotic answer has helpped me blow off some steam, which is taking the edge off of my B*tchy mood.. So thanks for that, jerk! :)

That is a good question.. You should post it.. Technically, it will only cost you 3 points.... since you got two for posting a question in an answer... Post the question, it is a good one.... Use three points and you will get a lot of good answers. However, if you don't want to post the question read the book skinny B*tch. It has a whole section on this subject.... Plus it is a funny, informative read.... Don't take everything to heart that is printed though.

Have a great day!

It looks like Fred either deleted his answer or it was deleted for him . . . Nice!

UPDATE: Sorry I didn't add this before. The kind of comfort food my Mom made was beef stew, chicken & dumplings... etc.. stuff you would eat in front of a fire place on a cold rainy day! Oh and I love all the cookie ideas! I love baked goods too for comfort food.

Thank you for all your wonderful answers! I appreciate it.

Thank you for all your wonderful answers! I appreciate it. My ultimate comfort food is a baked potato (okay, I really nuke them) with Earth Balance margarine and a bit of Herbamare seasoning.

If your favorite comfort food has milk, use soy milk. If you like ice cream, there's soy ice cream.

You can get vegan sausages, veggie crumbles, veggie burgers, and Follow Your Heart vegan cheese from Vegan Gourmet.

You can use tempeh to make veggie chili and dump that over a potato or fries.

If you use sugar, get evaporated cane juice crystals or turbinado sugar to avoid the bone char issue.

If you like mac&cheese, "La Dolce Vegan" by Sarah Kramer has a recipe, but since I'm not a mac&cheese person, I haven't tried it.

Go to www.veganstore.com or www.veganessentials.com to find some good vegan goodies for the next time you have a bad week.

If I knew what you used for comfort food, I could give you clues on veganizing it, but hopefully this gives you some ideas. Decent vegan chocolate. can't beat it.
Green and Blacks.

Or, if you fancy cooking something. try steamed pears in a redwine/cassis sauce..absolutely fantastic.

steam the pears in red 75% wine / 27% cassis fora n hour
add in cinimmon etc as if making mulled wine
allow to cool
seperate and cool in fridge over night
serve paers with vegan icecream and the reduced sauce poured over it all.

....being a troll in this forum is like having sex with a retarded dwarf....

....its not big, and its not clever. Lot of good food in Las Vegas. Pasta smothered in a hearty marinara sauce with a bit of soy cheese. Chocolate chip oatmeal nut cookies...the link is for the recipe. I've made these several times, and they are just as good as people say in the comments. All my non-veg friends love them, too. Not low fat or low cal, but vegan for sure :).

Hope your day gets better! Mashed potatoes made with soy milk.

"Stove top" stuffing made with cornbread stuffing (bread section), onions, veg bouillion, sage.

Spaghetti with marinara sauce. Eat with toasted baguette slices that have been rubbed with fresh garlic.

Fake beef stew

Chicken-fried "steak." Great recipe on vegcooking.com

Another comfort food of mine is General Tso Tofu, since I don't live in the states anymore. Great recipe is on vegweb.com Do you want actually dishes, or more like junk food? Well here's some or each:

Seitan dish:

2 shallots
2 soon fulls of olive oil
1 packet of seitan
3 larges potatoes
2-3 carrots
400 ml of vegetable stock in water
salt
pepper
paprika
20cl of soy cream

Peel and chop up the shallot. Fry it in the oil, then add the seitan in cubes and cook for 5 minutes. During that time, peel the potatoes and carrots and cut them into slices. Add them to the seitan and shallots, cook for 5 minutes. Add the vegetable stock, salt and pepper. Cover and cook at low heat for about half an hour. Take the lid of and let it cook a little longer until the water evaporates, then add the soy cream and paprika, until it’s hot. Eat right away.

Vegan chocolate chip cookies :
(for 5-6 cookies)

160g flour
120g sugar
1 tea spoon of vanilla extract
60g of chocolate chips
20g water
60g vegan margarine

Mix all the ingredients. Preheat oven at th 6. Put little blobs of the mixture on a tray (with baking paper on it), but don’t flatten them too much as they will spread. Cook until they start going a little golden (about 10-15min), then put them on a plat to cool down. If they are little soft it’s ok, they will harden as they cool.

Chocolate and orange cake:

200g flour
115g sugar
a pinch of salt
half a sachet of baking powder
4 tablespoons of vegetable oil
2 tablespoons of orange juice
the rind of a small orange
200ml water
? block of chocolate, cut into little pieces

In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, salt and baking powder.
Add the oil, orange juice, rind and water (I usually put a little less water and more orange juice). Mix with a fork. Do not beat. Add the chocolate. Mix again.
Poor into a greased tin. Cook at 180°C for about 30min (it takes less than that normally though).

Hope this helps. Anyway, just remember, you're not causing any suffering. That's the biggest comfort ever :-)

Go vegan! Fred V: What the heck are you talking about? The question is not attacking anyone at all! Wow can you even read? so this lady goes into the doctors office with a problem. she says, "doc, ive got this terrible situation. you see, i have this uncontrollable gas and the worst part is, i never know when its happening." the doctor says, "i see. i'll be right back." the doctor walks back into the office with a six foot long pole with a big hook on the end of it. the lady proclaims, "DOCTOR? WHATEVER ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH THAT?" to which the doctor replies, "i'm going to open that window up there, it stinks in here." Linda mcartney sausages, vegan friendly gravy, mashed potato and baked beans. mmmmmmmmm!

Veggie mince (i like 'realeat') in gravy with potatoes onion etc. You could even have a bit of puff pastry with it if you check the label for a vegan-friendly kind (lots have just veggie fat)

If you're in UK, Holland and Barret do a good porkless pie.

Cheese on toast with sauce of choice. (if you can find a vegan cheese that melts ok)

Last night I made a sponge cake with vegan egg-replacer and covered it in agave syrup and soya custard.

Rice pudding with soya cream. This is more of a follow up question than an answer. I am not vegan but I do eat an incredible amount of all natural products from vegetable sources. I see some great recipes on here but many of them include sugar. I have seen many vegan post that say that sugar as well as processed flour is not vegan. What is the true story. I'm not a vegan, but vegan chocolate chip cookies are insanely easy to make. Just look at any old recipe for chocolate chip cookies, non-vegan ones. A few minor substitutions will make a decent, EASY version.

1. Use semisweet, non-dairy chocolate chips. (Most grocery stores have them.)

2. Use vegan non-dairy margarine. (I'm sure, as a vegan of even a couple of weeks, you can locate this, but most medium or larger stores would have it.)

3. Instead of 2 eggs, use 1/4 cup of all natural, unsweetened applesauce. (Any grocery store should have this.)

4. Minor change to the baking soda content, meaning upping it to maybe 1 and 1/4 tsp, to make up for the pureed fruit content. The alternative baking company makes great cookies...I guess it depends on what kind of comfort food you are looking for...sweet, salty, cheesy...etc...

saw you mention something about the book skinny b*tch...love that book!!! Get a copy of Isa Chandra Moskowitz' Vegan With A Vengeance. vegans can eat great food as well like sorbet, ben and jerrys make sorbets you can eat they have no animal products what so ever
-green and blacks is brilliant
-innocent smoothies
-tru free chocolate bourn bourns
-alpro soya - any of the range you find will be vegetarian and vegan
visit the vegan society and see what great things they suggest for yummy non-animal foods - www.vegansociety.org

hope this helps Hummus with whole wheat pita. It's very filling. I totally second tamitofu's recommendation! "Vegan with a Vengeance" is full of SO many delicious recipes. I haven't had anything bad out of it. The broccoli and chickpea casserole fits the comfort food bill pretty well and it has plenty of awesome baked goods (the pumpkin muffins are downright addictive.) There are some stew-type recipes in there as well (ooh, the chipotle black bean stew was delish!)
