Smelling badly?!

Question:

Smelling badly?

I recently became a vegetarian, and I heard that some vegetarians develope a raunchy, musty smell after a few months. Does anyone know what causes this? Is it from eating too much processed food? Unbalanced diet? This is something I want to avoid, and I feel that smell would be a sign that you are doing something wrong in your diet.

Any help?

Well, for the trolls out there, this isn't about hygeine. This is about your diet affecting your smell. What you eat does affect how you smell.

Sandstorms_brother: On the contrary, I've seen this question several times on V&V from vegetarians and vegans wondering where that smell came from and how to get rid of it. I was hoping to get a different answer to actually find the cause of this rather than people saying, "Derrrrr, take a shower..." and, "You're a meateater trying to fill our heads with lies!!!"

You could just be detoxing. How long has it been since you've switched to vegetarianism? I never had a problem with odours, but I never really ate much meat to begin with.

Make sure you eat plenty of whole grains (flush out the system), fruits and vegetables, and try to get your protein from things like nuts, seeds and beans. Drink a lot of water to keep things moving. And try to cut back on processed foods because even if they are not causing the smell, they aren't good for you.

You could also talk to your doctor and explain what you have been eating, and he or she might be able to point out what the problem is, if none of us are able to help you. :o) Good luck. I highly doubt anything you eat can have an effect on your body odor. Change your underware, and take a shower everyday, twice if ya have to... On the contrary, it's meat that causes really bad body odor. The breakdown products of meat proteins (various amines and thiols) stink up the blood and eventually escape though the pores. The only vegetarian foods that cause body odor are onions and garlic, and there is no reason why a vegetarian would consume more of these than a meat eater.

Whoever gave you that rumor was obviously trying to have some fun messing around with you.

PS: Even veterinarians recommend not raising dogs on a purely carnivorous diet because it can lead to really bad doggie B.O. I don't know what causes it, but I worked with a lady when I was in college who was a vegetarian and she smelled horrible. I'm not sure if it was because of what she ate or because she didn't use deodorant (I never asked). I have dated a few vegetarians of the opposite sex, but dated mainly meat eaters throughout my 37 years of living. I Have been with plenty odorous meat eaters but have yet to encounter a smelly veg*n. I suspect it is lack of use of hygiene products or hygiene in general. There is no way a healthy plant based diet can make you smell any more than a Meat and Dairy based diet. Common sense would only have to tell you that hormone/pesticide/drugs/flesh fat/cholesterol/cancerous/tumo... ridden meat would have that effect.

Did you know that certain Asian populations that do not eat meat, cant stand the smell of Caucasian North American/Euro diet meat eaters? They say they can smell us a mile away. It is what you get used to, Just like Americans can smell a curry rich diet.

So there, eat that!
