Why do people become vegetarians?!

Question: Low cholesterol. Low blood pressure. Improved stamina. Humanitarian reasons. Environmental reasons. Religious reasons. Healthy BMI. Improved digestion. Lower cancer risks. Lower heart disease. I haven't had the same dinner twice, because there is more variety.

eating a lot of vegis
Because an animal has a brain.
i became vegetarian because i wanted to eat better and because i dont like the thought of eating animals. they have feelings just like us.
One they love animals and another is they want to live a healthy life.
For many different reasons. Me, personally I just don't like it and don't like the idea of eating flesh. Yuck!
Visit your local slaughterhouse and you'll know why.

Have you ever heard a pig or cow "scream" for its life seconds away from meeting the butchers blade?
There are many reasons people choose to become vegetarian.

1. They may not like the unethical treatment of animals. Animals grown for consumption are most of the time raised in very confined spaces, treated poorly (small pens, stalls in which the mother pig can't move around, artifical breeding, etc).
2. Others choose vegetarian lifestyles for the health benefits. Animals raised to be eaten are injected with many chemicals and medicines to help them grow faster and bigger. This in turn can be passed on to the consumer who eats the meat. Also, eating vegetables is a better choice as far as health.
3. Then others don't want to eat something that was once a living, breathing, creature.
erm... because, it's healthier, no innocent animals are ill-treated or slaughtered for the sake of consumption and erm..... eating a chicken wing is essentially the same as gnawing on a human arm..... veins, bones, skin, muscle.... *barfs* so gross!

.... oh yes, and the whole, steak thats still bleeding is GROSS!

??? no food with a face!! ???
LOL.

also, it doesnt bother me if other people eat meat, i don't judge them or condemn them, or tell them why they shouldn't. They can do what they want; but as a personal choice, i just don't eat it. (ive been a vegetarian since i was about 14-15; i'm a lot older now!).

*edit: Regina.... yeah, that whole flesh things is gross, isn't it?
*edit* to your details: Yes plants ARE living things, BUT they are not flesh..... with brains and intestines and veins and so on. I'd rather eat a room full of plants than one cow, or pig or chicken. But, as i said, it's just my choice. I don't care if you eat it. ?
BECAUSE PIGGIES ARE CUTE!!!!!!!!
oh, the horror............of saying goodbye to health problems
to diabetes
to arthritis
to early menopause
to saving the lives of ninety animals a year
to finding out that a years worth of sustainable and renewable food can be gained by the loss of the energy to grow one cow
People become vegetarians because of a certain disease each individual can have if they eat too much meats. Poor nutrition can influence the development of certain chronic diseases. These diseases are Heart Disease, Cancer, Diabetes, ... and much much more.
I became a vegetarian when I was 12 and went to a boarding school that had a small farm. The first time that I saw a chicken on the dinner table that had been running around the barnyard that morning, I knew I was becoming a vegetarian. Then I read about how being a vegetarian is healthier and better for the environment, and was even more convinced I'd made the right choice. I'm 46 now and will be a vegetarian the rest of my life.
I became a vegetarian due to digestive issues.
While some people have no ethical objections to eating certain types of animal meat, others object to the act of killing and eating an animal and/or the agricultural practices surrounding the production of meat. Reasons for objecting to the practice of killing animals for consumption may include animal rights, environmental ethics, certain religions, or an aversion to inflicting pain or harm on other living creatures due to conscience. Some people, while not vegetarians, refuse to eat the flesh of certain animals due to cultural taboo, such as cats, dogs, horses, or rabbits. In some cases, specific meats are forbidden within religious traditions. Some people eat only the flesh of animals who have not been mistreated, and abstain from the meat of animals reared in factory farms or from particular products such as foie gras and veal. Others believe that the treatment which animals undergo in the production of meat and animal products obliges them never to eat meat or use animal products.
No, it clears the conscious that plants DON'T FEEL PAIN when you tear their "flesh."
Plants are living things in the same way your toenails are living things. They grow and react to chemical stimuli, but do not have a cerebral cortex, are not sentient, do not feel pain, and are healthy to eat (plants, not toenails... please don't eat toenails).

It's like comparing you to a rock. Although at the end of the day a rock doesn't decide to be a ***** and ask stupid questions in the Y!Answers V&V section.

edit: You gather correctly, a lot of us don't wear leather... and especially not fur. And who eats poisonous, thorny plants?
WOW! You're so smart! You hear that everybody? Apparently, apples, oranges, cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, potatoes, beans, and wheat have thorns and are poisonous!

Nice job!

BTW, maybe, just maybe, you should think before you talk.

Also, vegetation doesn't feel pain or scream when you bite into it, because it doesn't have a nervous system; therefore, it doesn't have nerves... Or a brain to register the impulses sent by those imaginary nerves. You really need an education.

And no, we don't wear leather, fur, or wool.
so if ur saying this than you dont eat meat, fish, wheat, vegs, dairy, or fruits?
because im veg and im just wondering what u eat then. because of what ur saying u must not eat any of that stuff.
Why do people eat meat?

I mean seriously, why come in here and attack other peoples life choices?

If your secure in your own life and your own knowledge, what other people do or think should not be a problem for you.

As for your question, I personally become a vegetarian because i dont want obesity, osteoperosis or heart disease.
They feel bad for the animals or something. It's supposed to be really good for you...but still...
The want to extinct plants and let animals rule the world.
