How to cook a portobello mushroom?!

Question: I bought some large portobello mushroom caps. I have heard that people sometimes will just brush them in olive oil and garlic or something and cook them. Can someone give me a little more detail? Like can I sautee it in a pan or should I put it under the broiler ? What's the best way to cook it so you can just serve it as an entree like a slice of meat? Nothing fancy, please....I don't want to have to go to the store.....just use things I have on hand...

I love them sauteed in butter with some light italian seasonings (garlic, parsley, etc.)
I brush with oil and place under the broiler.
I also like to stuff them.

STUFFED MUSHROOM CAPS

6 each large mushroom tops
4 oz garlic butter
3 oz shredded mozzarella cheese
3 oz spinach and artichoke dip (cold)
6 each shrimp, peeled and deveined

With the back of a spoon, fill the mushroom tops with spinach and artichoke dip.
Place all the stuffed mushrooms (stuffing side up) in an Au-jus bowl or any high heat resistant dish.

Place a single shrimp on the stuffing for each mushroom cap (one shrimp for each cap).

Melt the garlic butter in the microwave and pour all over the mushroom caps.

Cover the caps with the shredded mozzarella cheese.

Bake at 400°F for 7 minutes.

Serve with a slice of garlic toast.

If you want to leave it whole, just brush it with a bit of oil and season it as you would a steak. Then broil or grill it. The portobello has a rich flavour that is a bit meat-like. I actually like them plain, broiled (watch it carefully it only needs a few minutes on each side until it's tender) and served with grilled onions or brushed with a strong garlic butter. You can also serve them up in a bun as you would a burger. They're great in a bun with pepper jack cheese, red onions and fresh baby spinach leaves, and mashed avocado or guacamole.
I am not sure if you have short grain rice or better still, brown rice. You can make portabella risotto. It has a creamy consistency and very meaty.
Soak it in Balsamic vinegar for about an hour. Then sautee it with a little olive oil and garlic!
you can put tomato sauce, cheese, and peppers on top and broil it to make pizzas. yummmmm (you can broil it in a toaster oven if you have one- so easy.)

and just in a frying pan with melted margerine or butter is delicious. add a little garlic and mmmmmm
The best way to eat a portobella cap mushroom is to marinate it in butter and garlic and either throw it on the grill or under the broiler. They taste very similar to a steak when they are cooked that way.

i saute them in italian dressing in a shallow skillet on the stove top
Grill them! Brush both sides with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill them with gills facing up on medium or low heat. Don't flip them or you will loose the juices! Grill for 5 to ten minutes. They will look shriveled. Delicious!
You can stuff them with a sausage/breadcrumb/egg/cheese mix and bake them for 40 min at 350 degrees.
Or slice them and fry them in olive oil with a little salt pepper and garlic.
Or you can use them in a stir-fry in place of or addition to the meat, using just about any marinade that you would have used with out figuring in the mushrooms.

Enjoy!
I like them grilled or even on a george forman grill. I brush them with olive oil and sprinkle with a little salt and pepper. I don't like them too soft so i grill them just until they're warm.
