Any vegetarians out there that have actually gained weight?!
I feel I have been eating a very healthy diet full of veggies, fruits, whole grains, etc. I drink 2-3 liters of water per day and watch my calories intake (I stay aroung 1200-1400 per day). I do not eat junk food very often at all (maybe once a week and it is very limited). I only drink water, with an occasional glass of milk, maybe a glass of wine 2-3 times a week. I also do pilates or yoga 3 times a week.
Why on earth would I be gaining weight
Answers: First off, I am a veg because of beliefs, NOT to lose weight.

Why on earth would I be gaining weight
I've been vegetarian since I was 12, also with a super-healthy diet, and as soon as I moved out of home I started gaining weight. I went on a prescription diet for a few weeks, and found that my problem was simply eating too much food. I didn't know how much to cook for one person, cooked too much and then ate too much of it. I also tended to fill up on starch and not eat enough protein. The other big factor was wine (I stay in a wine-farming area). Just 2-3 glasses a week made my tummy significantly bigger, and I weigh about a kilogram more on the weeks I drink wine. Also, it relaxes me until I don't really care about what I'm eating, and then I eat cake.
I don't think your problem is eating too much: your calorie intake sounds about right. You're also drinking lots of water, so it is unlikely to be water retention due to dehydration. Pilates uses a lot of energy, so it doesn't sound like you need more exercise (although some cardio exercise like running, swimming or cycling might increase your metabolism).
I think it's one of three things:
1. a thyroid problem. Get your doctor to check it, and you might need to take some iodine supplements.
2. you might have been underweight to start with, and with your healthy diet you are going back to a more healthy weight.
3. if you recently started with your pilates and yoga, you might be putting on muscle, not fat. This is a good thing - and muscle weighs more per litre than fat, so it won't make you look bigger.
Other ways you can stimulate your metabolism are some light exercise first thing in the morning, a cold shower or swim in the morning, and making sure to eat breakfast. Studies have showed that people who skip breakfast are fatter than those who don't.
hormones is most likely the cause. I actually lost 30 pounds... it depends on your metabolism too.
possibly look into a nutritionist.
i did the first few weeks, i supose i just thought that since i wasnt eating meat i could just eat loads of chocolate and that wouldnt be taking in much more fat than i usually did, but i was wrong. since then iv lost weight so yay!
I was a 200 lb vegetarian
I had been vegetarian for 16 years allready when I got to that point.
I am now a 128 lb vegetarian, after a year of working my butt off.. Cant' reccomend all my methods, though..
If you really eat right, it's likely hormonal or metabolic.. Ask your doctor to look for causes.. I'm going next week to have a pretty intense talk with a doctor.. Find out if there's any fixable reason my metabolism is so sucky, and why my hair has gotten progressively thinner since high school, until it is now mournfully pathetic..
i haven't but i know a few girls who gained weight being veggie because they substituted in ALOT of pasta and carbs so they would feel "full". also started eating alot of heavy cheeses, creams, to get protein.
first of all you're not a vegetarian..
read up on vegetarianism.
thanks.
Your probably over doing the pastas, I was and I gained weight also, Now On top of my lactose intolerand vegetarian diet, I consume only 1400 calories a day eating pasta once or twice a week. I started being a vegetarian 3 yeras ago and I would say I gained 40-60 pounds over those years. There are other factors for that aslo, I have PCOS which can make you gain weight. But my diets working well (20 pounds down! 40 to go) Keep away from those pastas, limit them.
you're on the pill?
