Is it hard going vegetarian?!


Question: My hubby is a BIG meat eater and I think it would be really easy for me to vegetarian. With that temptation around would it be really hard for me. Also I just found out that I have High Cholesterol and I am only 28. I was thinking this might be a good way to get that down. Any Hints????

It will probably be a bit temptation if you like meat.

but if your husband east a lot of meat it is bad for him too.

Red meat is especially bad for you.

You could still eat meat like white meat chicken and

tuna fish is really good for you because it has omega-3.

When my family would go on diets when I was younger my mom would flour mushrooms and fry them in canola oil.

For me it was a meat substitute. I like mushrooms alot now because of eating when I was younger.

She would also take cornmeal muffin mix and fry spoonsfull in a skillet. Kind of like flat hushpuppies.

Seasonings - add spice to veggies too.

Remember what ever you have to do, give up, is worth it for your health and for those who care about you.

I'm reminding my self also.
I have two young daughters and I'm overweight.

My whole family eats meat with (just about) every meal but it wasn't too hard for me to stop.

Of course, I kinda lost my taste for it after working for a butcher for 3 years. Don't think I'll ever have a craving for pork chops or steak again.

Going Vegetarian is a great way to help lower cholesterol but keep in mind that there are HDLPs and LDLPs in both meat and non meat products. It's all about avoiding those low density lipo proteins!

It's kind of a rocky road at first, at least I found it was because the rest of my family ate meat. I think I slipped up at least twice when it came to meat for the first month. But afterwards I just went without it. I'm technically a pescetarian, so I still eat seafood.

It's really not that hard after maybe the first month. I recommend checking out your local health food store because they often have imitation meats, and other things with lots of protein and no meat. Good luck, and congratulations for making this decision :-)

Everybody is different so all anybody can do is explain their own experiences to show you what you might too. And this might be a guide for you.

I cut things out gradually. First all meat, then eggs, then fish, then dairy. Going to only dairy took me two years. Then cutting that final animal product, cheese took me four more years. I had two failed attempts at cutting dairy and I still crave it. So yes, you might have a hard time going vegan, and you might break the diet but you can keep trying and maybe you'll get there!!

I got there, it wasn't easy, I'm glad I did it. The health benefits are amazing not to mention the ethics issues ect.

It was a challenge for me, but once you find your footing and realize there are plenty of things to eat, you'll be fine. You're going to need hubby's support on this one, though. Maybe he could just have meat outside the home, and you cook him veggie meals so it's a bit easier for you. There are tons of analogues out there--vegan sausages, vegan "chick" and "beef" strips, veggie burgers, filets. Learn to make your own seitan and sub it in meat recipes.

A good cookbook is "The Vegetarian Meat and Potatoes Cookbook" by Robin Robertson. What your meat-loving husband probably wants is hearty meals, and this will give you hearty foods to make.

And while a vegan diet can lower cholesterol, family history plays a big part (as the commercial points out). I have a family history of high cholesterol, and even eating vegan, mine's still elevated. Granted, it's lower than it was a few years ago when I first went veg, but I'm still worried.

Your mentality is wrong.

If you go veg for the right reasons: your own health and concern for animal rights, you'll never be "tempted" to eat meat. It's not as if vegetarians are on some restrictive diet, always pining for dead animals to eat. Quite the contrary, we enjoy an amazing variety of delicious, nutritious meals.

BTW- even if you don't eat it, if you continue buying meat for your husband, you are NOT A VEGETARIAN.

No as long as you educate yourself about nutrition.
You will be doing yourself a favor but your husband is heading for trouble. Big meat eaters get bowel cancer.
