Oranges are acidic?!

Question: I have always seen oranges listed in Alkalizing foods category but I have also read that excessive consumption of oranges may lead to some teeth damage because of high acidic content. How could it both be alkalizing and acidic at the same time?

I am talking about oranges, not orange juice.

foods can be varyingly acidic, alkaline or neutral. the ph of the body, the blood and the digestive tract after consuming foods can all be alter differently after consuming them. they dont always necessarily line up.

berries are a good example, they are usually very acidic but have an alkaline affect on the body. lemons generally do to. whereas leafy greens are alkaline and are generally alkalizing, the chemical make up of the food and what state the body is in can affect overall effect.

personally, i try to eat more firm fruit as they are not as acidic.

one of the things about acidic foods, is that if you eat them in combination with other foods, they can affect the over all balance of what the person eats which can suck if youve eaten a very big meal thats neutral over all...

i try to eat fruits only on an empty stomach to avoid the possibility of them affect balances or even fermenting other food in the stomach.

I dont mind the odd orange or mandarin, but its fruit like apples, pears and bananas that i will eat on a daily basis.

i save oranges, mangoes and pineapples for treat foods, even though they are still good for you.

you can read a bit more in depth about it here if you wish:

good luck : )

Ever heard of citric acid? Just wow.

I've never heard of alkalizing foods. Oranges are acidic. I did some looking and every site I read about alkalizing foods reeks of snake oil.

Foods which are acidic in nature, like oranges, lemons, etc., leave your body alkaline after digestion, unless too many are eaten at once or they are eaten with other foods, like sugar that turn them acidic in the end. Foods that start out not being acidic, turn our bodies that way after digestion, like meats, starches and sugars.
Most fresh veggies and fruits will leave your body alkaline, which will keep you healthy.

LMAO Coxer!

oranges are a rich source of citric acid..................

Depending on variety - pH 3.6 - 4.4

pH < 7.0 = acid
pH 7.0 = neutral
pH > 7.0 = base

USDA considers any food w/ pH 4.6 or lower as a high acid food; and foods w/ pH > 4.6 as low acid food.

They are still very good for you. The key is to maintain a balance. Do not go overboard with the acidic foods.
