Do vegetarians know for sure that plants don't feel pain when we pick, cook, or eat them?!

Question: you see.. i am a vegetarian... but the fact is that we still hurt the plants when we pluck the fruits and etc... ancient people in India used to eat what fell from the trees cos it was considered a sin to pluck stuff from trees... it is still a sin but there is no way out.. either you eat or you die.. so we have to...

<---edit--->
the fact that plants dont have a nervous system is not an excuse... not having nervous system doesnt mean plants are not living... killing or hurting any living being is a sin..

PS All I talk about is according to Hinduism..

?? Just Beat It ??

I suppose not - but they don't have nervous systems...

I guess because they don't have a heart or internal organs system similar to ours they figure they don't have feelings.

GOOD QUESTION!!!!!!

no.

yes. plants do not have nerves to transmit pain nor a brain to interpret those signals as something negative.

Plants don't have eyes or brains. They don't get terrified when about to be agonizingly killed.

no, but would you rather that be true and us starve ourselves, or us not think that

Dear God some people just don't know when to stop. I mean I have seen city people dope over animals ,but completely ignore the cry of help from a human being. I believe it is the same with plants. Don't abuse the earth ,but please don't take it that far either.

well, they've just discovered that plants with an intranet root system communicate to avoid predators, so who's to say that they don't feel pain. anything is possible.

Yes!! I love to hear their cries and screams when I rip them out of the earth.

Take that you artichoke! I'm going to boil you in scolding hot water, cut off your stem, dip your leaves in hot butter and EAT YOUR HEART OUT!

humans, animals, and plants are all living things so even if you a vegetarian you are eating something that is well a live

They don't have a nervous system, so no.

We will never know for sure. All we can do is refer to the latest studies about it. Only a plant would know, so we are never going to find out the truth about it.

they do not have a brain
they have no centeral nervous system

Therefore they cannot feel pain, emotions, and cannot think, reason, be self-aware

Yes they do thats why im A fruitarian rite and im so much more healthier and im so nice to the earth I feel great. Leave those veg alone!!!

What, so we shouldn't eat ANYTHING? I think it's better to eat something that won't cry out in pain and bleed the same red blood that I would. Besides, plants don't have nervous systems.

That's what blanching is all about. Plunge your veg into boiling water and they don't have time to scream.

You need a processing unit (brain) to feel pain. Plants don't have brains. Neither do clams or oysters or scallops.

As most of the vegetarians have said, plants don't have the nervous systems to feel or interpret pain. Plants are alive in the way your toenails are alive... they grow and react to chemical stimuli, but they have no will of their own. They do what they do just as a reaction, not because of reason or pain. That means they're ok to eat (the plants, not your toenails).

btw... It is estimated that to produce one pound of beef it takes about fifteen pounds of grain. It only takes one pound of grain to make one pound of bread. Therefore, if plants did have feelings, eating meat would still be worse for the plants.

trust me...they scream, we just cant hear them.

Oh People, Plants are dead when we pick them but they have life when we eat them. In Genesis 1:29 God said "Every fruit bearing plant that has seed init, to you it shall be for your food." Plants that have seeds are there for a reason. So that we may increase and multiply our food supply. HE knew that we would need more food. He created them for a reason. Because HE knew that they were best for our bodies and for the earth. We are not supposed to eat the seeds, we are supposed to plant them. Plants do not have feelings. The plant that died when put next to the heated fish bowl or tank died because of the HEAT. When heat is applied to anything, it dies. It kills the enzymes in the plant and it withers and dies. It's that simple.

i love the answers that they do not have a central nervous system to feel pain, no mouth to scream with. no eyes to see you comeing at it. no face. i use all the same things when i steam a big bowl of clams

We don't. But we know for sure that animals do.

actually i've thought about this question alot but i guess its a little different from eating animals because they dont have organs like a heart or brain. We have to eating something, so if it weren't for fruits and veggies there would be no way for vegetarians or vegans to survive.

Interesting question since plants are "Alive" and they also "Die". But what the heck are they gonna eat if your theory is true?

fact is that everything we eat is a living thing, the difference?,blood, and plants can't scream, so vegetarians feel better about that.

the discovery channel did a study on plant life and they sat a plant next to a fish tank. when the fish moved the plant did to. so they heated the fish tank up. when they boiled the fish the plant died. it withered because the fish was in pain. so yes studys show that plants do have feeling. just because they dont have a heart doesnt mean they dont feel. if that was the case when you picked flowers they wouldnt die if you kept them in water. but they do die. they cant breath the oxygen that they need.

and for most vegetarians- they eat cookies and cake and dinner rolls and bread and all that fun stuff was an egg not once a baby chicken? think about it!

The plants do. There are studies of them 'screaming' when they are picked from the ground.

Plants DO have a stress response that causes them to create more of the proteins responsible for allergic reaction. They don't enjoy being eaten any more than a cow does. They just physically interpret and respond to the threat of death differently.
