Vegetarians & non-vegs, what do you think about eating eggs?!

Question: Why do you eat it or why don't you? Don't you think it's weird that an animal produced it? I am a vegetarian & I do eat eggs & I understand why vegans don't because how the chickens are treated. But what do you think?

well, there is no live being in the egg, a chicken hatching an egg is a normal hormonal thing for the chicken, farmers are not going to sell you an egg with a chick in it. I'm a vegetarian and i generally buy cage free, organic fed eggs. it's a good source of protein, ya it was produced by an animal but so is milk, so is all dairy really, i kind of see eggs in the same way.

Let me tell you how chickens are treated on my family's farm. Like princes, and princesses.

The best hay, the best seed, the best water (well water), and the egges we take are not fertilized. We have a 10 year old pair or roosters on the premises, and they are treated like "pimps".

Our eggs are the best in the world.

Yes, it is primarily the treatment of the chickens that makes me avoid eggs. But there are also health issues associated with them, like excess of cholesterol. And also, chickens on egg farms are typically not fed very well so what they eat gets processed into the egg and then you consume what they are consuming. It's hard to know for sure what kind of stuff you're getting second-hand, if you will. So I just avoid them entirely. Same with milk...

I don't eat eggs because they're disgusting. It's an unfertilized yolk surrounded by a mucous-like substance... ugh!

Eggs are chicken periods. Period.
Think about it, when a human woman ovulates, she releases an egg with the blood that lines the uterus. As a chicken is a bird and not a mammal, they lay eggs. The eggs we eat are unfertilized eggs released from the body, therefore, similar to a period.
Ummm, who wants some chicken periods for breakfast!?

I dont eat eggs cos it supports cruelty. Half the birds that hatch die because they're boys.

I eat foods with egg in them (baked goods, things like that) but I can't eat eggs on their own like scrambled, poached, etc. Something about eggs like that just makes me feel sick, they taste bad to me and look gross and they SMELL terrible.

I don't even like cracking eggs to use for baking so when I bake at home about 90% of what I make is vegan (I never use cow milk in my baked goods, I use flax and things in place of eggs and I usually have vegan butter around)

I think I'll likely wander back into veganism at some point in my future. I can eat some things and be okay but if I really sit and think about what exactly it is I'm eating and where it came from I feel queasy and ick.

Oh my gawd! Eggs are like, eeeeeeewwwww! They are groatee to the max stuff that Jacques Pepin would make something out of! I'm throwing up all over my vegan suit and party symbol. Eggs are a chicken abortion!! Faek!!! Chickens are democrats!!

My whole family is vegetarian and we eat eggs once a month.

You don't feel completely guilty and sometimes you just want to eat it.
I do feel very sorry for the way chickens are treated but what
can we do about it the Carnivores are never going to stop being Carnivores.

Well... KuroNekko changed my perspective on things... Never thought that eggs are chicken periods. But anyway I haven't been eating eggs since a good number of years. I don't eat any meat since 16 - I am 24 now. But I do drink milk and eat milk products. Hopefully there's nothing that bad about those...

I've thought hard on this lately. It doesn't hurt an animal and might be seen as a bargin with the chickens, I take good care of you, you give me eggs.

But there's two issues on my mind. Do I know chickens agree with this bargin, or do they really have no choice. I mean chickens are no longer the original flying free birds they once were before we bred them into a gimpy dependent animal it is today.

The other issue is that our digestive system uses bacteria to do most of the food breakdown in our intestines. Do I really want to be culturing bacteria in my body that want to take a bite out of me as well? Eatting carrots fills my digestive tract with veggie eatting bacteria. Eatting eggs fills my digestive tract with animal eatting bacteria. I'm an animal lol.

There's one more issue for homesteaders. To not have even one animal on your farm means to have the freedom to come and go as you please since there's no animal there that depends on you for their survival. Feral cats don't count, I had an outside cat once and if I was away for a few days he didn't look any skinnier. In fact he would go away for a few days himself. The perfect pet for a vegan?

Ummmmmmmmmm .. . because I like eggs? Or is this a trick question? I'm sorry I don't have anything more profound than that ... I do so hope my reply is adequate, especially for the insightful and penetrating intellects that vegan responders will be exhibiting.
