The first 4 answers to your question give you great advice. The basic idea is to refrain from beef or pork until you get accustomed to the "white" meats like fish, seafood, poultry.

A couple of weeks and you should be able to tackle a burger or small steak.

Good thinking on dumping the veggie thing ... life is stressful enough without dealing with all that crap. Sounds like you like having a "life" without unnecessary stress. VERY smart and MATURE. I got sick of it too my first year in college. It was like FREEDOM, my whole attitude changed. I just eat sensibly now and actually ENJOY it. The quality of my friends changed as well. I met interesting people who weren't freaking over nutrients, foods, etc. etc.

if you didn't eat fish while you were vegetarian, maybe you could start with eating fish. fish like basa or tilapia is mild tasting....i'd guess after that you could move on to mild tasting meats like white meat chicken/ white meat turkey

You'll have to start out very slowly, with just simple stuff like chicken broth and beef broth. Then add a little bit of meat to soups, then try some fish, then some bland chicken, then beef last. Try each food for a week or two, giving your body an adjustment time. You shouldn't get sick if you go slowly. Your body will start to make the enzymes that it needs to digest meat again, but it needs time. Good Luck.

Gently start eating meat, small portions at first, it won't take long. People were meant to eat meat, that's why God gave us steak!

I was a vegetarian for over a year too until I had some bacon on my vacation. It did make me a little quesy and didnt even taste that good.
But, I've since reintroduced lean chicken and turkey back into my diet. Just go slow. Don't over do it the first couple of times you try meat.
Good luck!

I can't think of n e reason as to why u would get sick, everyone else eats meat, but because it is your health, I would ask ur doctor about it.

Think of this: Why did you become a vegetarian in the first place? If it's for the sake of animal suffering, then I think you should continue to be a vegetarian. If it's for health reasons, then you can go back to eating meat. No, you can't get sick for eating meat after being a vegetarian for a year.

It's a hamburger, not a cup of hemlock.

Just go to your local burger joint and order one. Nothing is going to happen. That is, nothing except realizing what you've been missing.

First make up ur mind. Do u really want to start eating meat again. If u do, then consider this. My sister's friend has been veg for a long time and a about a month ago she was at a restaurant, she ordered a vegeterian meal and got real meat. She didn't realize it was real meat and ate the whole thing. Afterwards her stomach started hurting really bad. She had to be taken to the hospital. Her stomach wasn't used to digesting animals. She was fine after a week or two. If u still want to eat meat start eating little by little so u don't end up in the hospital.

i dont eat meat unless once in awhile on thanksgiving or xmas. you WILL not get sick by far that is a myth i went yrs without meat and i went and ate turkey and i was fine. you need some nutrients if u are not getting them, so try turkey or chicken sandwhich you will NOT get sick that is all in your head

If you've been a true vegetarian, without breaks, for a year, you might get a little sick when you start to eat meat again. You should ease into it. Start with some mild fish, such as tuna, move onto poultry, then red meat and pork.

You won't die. Just start off with something light like fish and gradually work your way up to rare steaks.

Welcome home. Now go get me a beer! :)

Being vegetarian/vegan is a personal choice. You knew what it involved and the sacrifices you were going to make. So why the sudden change in heart? Because all your friends are having steak and telling you how yummy it is?
There are many vegetarian foods out there that taste like meat and even look like it. You don't have to stick strictly to a cabbage and water diet.

ps; vegEtarian. Not vegitarian.

eat 1 meal with meat per day for a week then you can eat it 3 times a day, you problly won't get sick, you'll gain lot of weight fast but thats just because it takes alot longer to process meat, best luck to ya

I'm vegan and I got very sick eating a piece of thanksgiving turkey...it was very painful, so I decided it's not worth it.

But, having said that, it's up to you. Enough people here have told you it's going to be painful, but if you want to eat meat again, start out on the weekends, and not on your lunch break at work.

And, to Julie...actually, if you ever been in a health food grocery store, you would see that there are hundreds vegan products made with soy from veganise to vegan pasta to smart deli cold cuts, so NO we don't ingest eggs, cheese, milk and the like.

Honestly meat won't kill you unless you eat it raw or that will olny make your sick so try making sandwiches with sandwiches then try bacon then chicken the try to eat steak.

If you're sick of it...then try meat. Slowly though. I know some people who can dive right back into eating meat and others...it can take awhile.

You may experience stomach aches...but other than that, I dont think there is anything to be afraid of.

I was vegetarian for about 2 years when I got sick of it and tried a piece of pork. It wasn't what I remembered it being. To me, it just tasted weird and gross! So who knows you could experience that...or you could love it.

just try a little piece of something. No sense restricting yourself. If you want it...have it. If you like it then maybe you should reasses your vegetarianism.

It happens to ALL of us. Just gotta do what's best for you!

I have friends who transitioned from being veggies back to meat eaters.
Most of them eased back into it. They didn't run out the first night and get a filet mignon wrapped in bacon!
Try a little and see how you feel.

If you feel that way, then you never really were vegetarian. I haven't eaten meat for 23 years and I can't imagine doing it again.

Sorry if that sounded hateful. I have a sister in law who tried being a vegetarian and later gave it up by eating pork (and she's Jewish). It didn't seem like any big deal to her.

YOU WON'T GET SICLK

Eat a little at a time. Make sure it's thoroughly cooked, like steak on the grill.
Chopmeat, like a hamburger, should be easy to digest. That's why it was invented...it was thought to be a healthful way to eat meat.

I've been a vegetarian for a while now, and I accidentally ate a piece of chicken that was in my pasta last week. It tasted HORRIBLE. If you have been a vegetarian for awhile, it will be hard to get used to the taste of animal flesh again.

i don't think you've been consistent enough. why did you even become a vegetarian. i don''t think that is fair to all the poor suffering animals that get slaughtered everyday for our pleasure.

Hey 'easy tiger.'

God did not give us steak any more than he gave us human flesh to eat.

To the asker of this question-

While I do not wholeheartedly condone the fact you want to eat meat again, I have no place in complaining. So I will be grateful you saved animals lives in the past year and offer you this information-

Humans are meant to eat meat only in circumstances when other food is available. Your body is used to the optimal human diet- No meat at all.

But you are going onto a different diet, which is fine. It isn't as healthy as a well balanced vegetarian diet, but it is still perfectly fine.

I would start with small portions, maybe one-two ounces a day.

Then max it out at 4 ounces a day. That is the max you can healthily eat.

Good luck,

John.

People don't go veg because its a convenient easy thing to do, they do it to save lives, and end suffering and they are very committed to it. yes, you could get very sick from eating meat - meat eaters have a 40% greater cancer rate than vegetarians.

Well, research has proven without a doubt that you will have a much higher chance of all kinds of diseases if you go back to eating meat. However, I'm starting to think that maybe this is all part of Nature's plan to thin the herd. So, um, start with chicken and then move on up to big, juicy steaks! I hear organ meat is delicious, too. Give that a try. And fry everything in lard.

Well, here's a good idea, at grocery stores (Target, Walmart etc) in the produce asile, they have these things called vegan produce. There are deli slices, sausage, chicken strips, chili, etc. and it's all made of soy, veggies and so on BUT it tastes like meat its really good and healthy too! I love them hope you try them!! I'm sure you'll like it.

Just take it slow as people suggested. You will be fine. If you are interested in balancing your normal diet, you might google "Flexitarian Diets" and check out the websites. Welcome back to the real world.

Another benefit You will also not have to deal with people who make asinine comments like this:
"If you feel that way, then you never really were vegetarian.: from the "mah jong" or wtf his name is. What kind of stupid airhead logic is that??

Uhh Julie? Vegans don't eat milk, cheese, or eggs.

the reason i wud say u feel sick is because its in your mind the thought of eating meat ,,, u eat animal by products and even realize it ,

you vegan's amaze me.. you all eat a variety of meat a day and will not acknowledge it.. milk, cheese, eggs.. where do you believe that these items come from the wheat fairy.. no they come from animals so they have animal genes in them..oh bye the way what were you before this yr...
